To me, there is really no need for blending Founders stouts. Specifically with Imperial and Breakfast, both have a good bitter component and wouldn't necessarily complement each other. Now if you would blend a sweeter component with Imperial (maybe like a Southern Tier Creme Brulee) then you might have something.

I thnk their similarities is the reason I would blend. Not looking for some staggering contrast of a snake bite or black n tan. Just trying to take two unbroken things, neither of which need fixing and seeing how they'd join.

I like the idea of the porter too though.

They're both great beers I couldn't see the blend not being awesome.

Both packs I got were brand new, so I'm gonna do it now and then try both with 10 months on them.
Seeing as there hasn't been overwhelimg advice to NOT do it, it'll most likely happen this week.

You might be on to something, Rebus. If Bell's Black Note is a BBA'd blend of Expedition Stout and Double Cream, then why not see what a blend of Founder's Imperial and Founder's Breakfast tastes like? I've been wondering for years why we haven't seen a Founder's Imperial Breakfast Stout.

Suppose one had multiple fall/winter '13 and '14 of both FIS and FBS....and waited for fall/winter '15 for both FBS and FIS.

    '13 FBS and '13 FIS 2oz + 2oz
    '13 FBS and '14 FIS 2oz + 2oz
    '13 FBS and '15 FIS 2oz + 2oz

    '14 FBS and '13 FIS 2oz + 2oz
    '14 FBS and '14 FIS 2oz + 2oz
    '14 FBS and '15 FIS 2oz + 2oz

    '15 FBS and '13 FIS 2oz + 2oz
    '15 FBS and '14 FIS 2oz + 2oz
    '15 FBS and '15 FIS 2oz + 2oz

That'd be a pretty good test to find the sweet spot for crossing it up?

P.S. Anything over about 2 years cellaring on these is proving to be an oxidized chocobomb without careful waxing and colder handling.

Are you talking about both the FIS and FBS? I for sure agree with FBS being way better fresh and really dropping off with age. I haven't tried anything past a year on FBS because it wasn't very good at a year.

On the other hand, I think FIS ages gracefully for years. Of course, proper cellar conditions help, but I have never waxed them.

FIS is aging more gracefully for sure, but it's definitely a velvety chocobomb verging on that hint of oxidation at 2 years when subjected to upper cellar temps (approaching 60 degrees) without wax. I will be going to the trouble of waxing the next batches of both for any extended cellaring. I think it's more the caps and sealing that affects oxidation more so than anything else.

So, for blending purposes, I think up to two years can be a fair test

I've never mixed Breakfast Stout with anything but I have mixed FIS with Double Trouble as I'm a Hophead and I like to make Hi Octane Black & Tans, with that said FIS is one of the Stouts I really like all by itself

I could see the breakfast stout getting crummy. Maybe an older imperial with a fresh breakfast to liven it up would be the route to go. Also upon contemplating the porter more, I think it would work well with the breakfast. I think that coffee bite of breakfast would pierce the porter nicely.

I've never thought about this and my first reaction was " why - they are both great " but now I'm thinking it might be worth a try. What's the worst that can happen ? If it sucks I won't do it again.
