As we move into the fall my cravings for the dark roastiness of stouts begins to grow. I just moved to MN this past week and am wondering what some of the best available stouts are (and when they usually show up). Mostly talking about shelf beers here as I'm up in northern MN and won't have much access to limited releases. However, I'm also wondering what some of the top limited release stouts are for the state. I'm planning on making the trip for darkness day but I'm hopeful there are others out there as well that might be worth travelling for. Any insight would be appreciated. Cheers!

Where in MN are you exactly?

Stouts/porters that should be available outside the metro, especially northern MN:
    - Bent Paddle Black
    - Bent Paddle Cold Press Black
    - Castle Danger George Hunter
    - Lake Superior Sir Duluth
    - Fulton War & Peace / Worthy Adversary (their distro has been slowly expanding north; if this hasn't reached you yet, it's only a matter of time)
    - Summit Oatmeal Stout
    - Schell's Stout

Stuff that is harder to come by, but worth seeking out:
    - Surly Darkness
    - Indeed Rum King
    - Bent Paddle Double Black
    - Fitger's Edmund Fitzgerald (and BA)
    - George Hunter variants

Those are just some that come to mind. There is a plethora of options available on tap around the Twin Cities. If you do come down for Darkness Day, it would behoove you to hit up Dangerous Man, Indeed, Sisyphus, Fulton, etc. for some cold weather beers.

If milk stouts count, Brau Brothers Moo Joos is a solid milk stout and available year round.

I'd add Summit's Great Northern Porter to the list too. Really nice one that doesn't get mentioned a lot.

when it comes to limited bottle releases, i would say your top three are darkness, ba silhouette, and bent paddle double black. you might also add bent paddles vanilla cold press (brewery only) and ltd's night falls to that list as well.

FYI Schell's Stout has not been brewed in several years. Wish it was not true as I really liked that one. Especially if you added a little fresh cold-press coffee, holy hell. As we all know but should clarify that Summit Oatmeal Stout is a nitro only draft release.

Should be a good season for bourbon-barrel stouts in the far west metro with Hayes and Waconia both doing bourbon-barrel imperial stouts that will be out during the holidays. I sampled the Waconia one straight out of the barrel about a month ago, and it was great. Waconia is using Four Roses and Hayes is using Panther bourbon barrels. Also of note is that the Hollywood Roadhouse is commissioning Hayes to do a couple of barrels of Panther Rum barrel-aged imperial stout as well.

I don't quite understand the hype around barrel aged imperials....... or 99% of barrel aged anything, and imperials in general.

There can be a lot of hype around them, but when done right, they can be very good and add even more complexity to the beer.

I used to not be able to drink them, hell, I used to not be able to drink imperial stouts. But as I got into craft beer more, I started liking them. In fact, I am starting to get into bourbon now too.

I can see if you can't stand or just don't like bourbon (or other hard liqours), not liking them. It is an acquired taste, one you may never grow to like.

The best Minnesota porter packaged in 12-packs. The ONLY Minnesota porter packaged in 12 packs.

P.S. George Hunter was worth a try.

Was at Castle Danger on Sunday and George Hunter on Nitro was good stuff. Their sommelier and gentlemen versions are also quite tasty.

My favorite regular drinking stouts are Summit Oatmeal and Badger Hill's Foundation. Not sure how far BHF is distributed.
