It's a pet peeve of mine when the label on a beer doesn't tell you what style it is. Example:

Nowhere on the label or description does it say what kind of beer this is, other than that it's an ale. Sure, I look it up on BA and it says it's an IPA, problem solved. But the brewer should give the customer at least a general idea of what the beer is.

Also, when no ABV is on the label, it kind of frustrates me. Yes, thankfully this website we're on exists, so my frustrations can easily be extinguished, but come on: even if your state doesn't require you put the ABV on the label, do it anyway. I and many other consumers will thank you and be more likely to purchase your beer.

Anyone got any other things that irk them about beer labels?

Note: Let's try not to talk about freshness dates in this thread unless they're actually on the label, not the bottle. Freshness dates stamped on the bottle could be its own thread with how much can be brought up on the subject. Thank you.

I hate when breweries (COUGH STONE COUGH) get super preachy and lengthy with their beer descriptions. I don't need to read an essay about what I'm drinking. Give it to me short, sweet, and accurate, and that's all I need.

I really dislike when there is no info about ABV on the label.

ABV...absolutely. I must know the strength before I buy. If I buy a a sixer of something and find out it's 9% after the third beer, the night could end quickly.

Just the date. If the beer interests me enough I can see what style and abv it is on my phone.

Damn, I didn't even think to say the date. Totally agree. But disagree about checking my phone for the ABV. I don't wanna have my phone in my face for every beer I'm interested in.

Some brewers evidently think "Styles" are just made up bullshit. Maybe they have a point.

Amazes me that ATF and local alcohol regulators can be butthurt over a baby on a label, but not putting ABV on a label is perfectly ok. Logic is never a government's strong suit.

When an IPA says "Imperial / Double" which is it an imperial or a double? Also ABV and bottled date

For a while it was even illegal to put abv on the label, but yes with craft beeper it needs to be labeled so I don't over do it.

"Imperial/Double" is redunant. Don't care which, one or the other. Leaves room for the ABV on the label.

Lack of ABV and difficult to find where and when it was brewed. I like seeing where a beer is from.

What I feel needs to be on the label:
    • Brewery
    • Beer name
    • Beer style or a brief description if you feel it doesn't fit a defined style (sometimes this is covered by the name)
    • ABV

Ditto on dates for IPAs. This makes or breaks buying decisions for me.

This too. And dates in general for that matter. I almost bought a sixer of Flying Dog's Irish red not too long ago but decided against it because there was not date. I found out later it had came out in February.

Every beer should have the following information clearly listed on it:
    Name of Brewery
    Name of Beer
    Style of Beer
Brief description of the beer, not a full story explaining the inspiration behind said beer (Saison brewed with Lemons and aged in Chardonnay barrels for 10 months)
    ABV
Location of Brewery (City and State)
    Bottled/Canned date
    Onces/MLs

I shouldn't have to look up this basic information on a beer. I really don't need catch phrases or extra can/bottle art if it's going to take away from any of the above information.

Bottled on date, it's much easier to see on the label than on the bottle.
