This dank fruity, estery double altbier is brewed in the traditional-ish style of the Doppelsticke, which is the widely known secret Germanic-esque strong ale. Like it's California Common counterpart, we fermented this ale at a lower temperature to pull out the sulphur-y bite from the yeast, then dry-hopped it with some dank, Sticky hops, including some brand-spankin'-new Enigma hops from the great Down Under!

Another brand you could try is the German brewed version:

    “Uerige "Doppelsticke"

    Description

    Style: Altbier

Created and designed by Uerige Obergaerige Hausbrauerei for their very special customers in the USA only!

Uerige DoppelSticke might just be “Germany’s interpretation of the classic barley-wine style “, ie a third definition next to England’s “malt-driven” concoction {such as JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale} and America’s “hop-heavy” version {such as Sierra Nevada’s BigFoot}.

“As if this were not enough, Zum Uerige has in Doppel Sticke invented a new variation on the style. The hop aroma is huge and herbal. The palate is rich, oily, enwrapping. The finish is full of restrained power. No alcohol burn, just a warm glow.”

    Michael Jackson 2005, press release

“The complexity here is enough to drive one mad.”

    Fred Eckhardt, Author

    “Delicious and bursting with character.”

    Garrett Oliver, Brewmaster

    Pair with cheese

    Tasting Notes

    Appearance:

Dark brown with a tan head

    Aroma:

Aroma of malt along with hints of bittersweet fruits.

    Flavor:

The flavor is complex with tastes of caramel and roasted malts initially, followed by sweet fruit and slight bitterness.

    Finish:

Nice blend of hops and malts pronounces a lingering bitter finish.

    Specifications

    Alc./Vol.: 8.5 %

    Original Gravity: 1085

    IBU: 75

    EBC: 55

From a product descriptor on Enigma. ......" ‘Pinot Gris’, ‘raspberries’, and ‘redcurrant’, through to rock melon and light tropical fruit. We don’t feel that any of these are really adequate, but we do know that the flavours and aromas are irresistibly appealing!"

There seems to be a number of new hops out there which are enigmatic and appear to be difficult to describe from a hop flavor/aroma perspective. Another example is Equinox:

    “Equinox™ Pellet Hops

At first, Equinox is familiar—in a pleasant, desirable way. Tropical fruit, papaya and mango notes reminiscent of Mosaic and Citra offer versatility across fresh-flavored styles. Then, things get weird.

In the midst of the bright citrus and melon there is a ribbon of green pepper. Or something like green pepper. It’s not green pepper in the eat-it-with-hummus-use-it-on-a-fajita sense of green pepper. It’s sweet and fruity but seemingly not fruit.

The interpretations of Equinox have been so wildly different yet similarly perplexed that we’ve decided it’s just one of those hops you’ll have to experience for yourself.”

    Cheers!

You know I always see this bottle around but never paid it attention. Thanks for info! Sold by the "Germany’s interpretation of the classic barley-wine style" description.

The doppelsticke is perhaps the beer world's best kept secret to beer geek. I will be looking forward to this one.

I'm down, sounds like an interesting style, I love German beers and I generally enjoy Lagunitas' seasonal/one-off beers.

Uerige's Doppelsticky is fantastic, let's see if this makes its way here to BC. Probably not tough.

Jack, I believe this was the style that Victory brewed to celebrate their 10th Anniversary in 2006. It will be interesting to see what will be th type and style of beer that they will brew next year to celebrate No. 20!
