Drinking craft beer just to be "cool"?

I'm cool. Just ask me.

 

I drink micros and macros. Anybody who doesn't for the sheer sake of it or thinks it is uncool is a Beer Snob. I just happen to prefer micros over macros in most cases. Macros have their place. It's all relative, without macros, micros don't exist.

 

What a limiting view of this community and why people come here to participate.

You don't have to like AALs and you certainly don't have to "force" them down. But the "B" in "BA" stands for beer. Any beer. ALL beers. I don't see why anyone on BA would have so much trouble understanding this simple idea.

The slogan is "Respect Beer," not "Respect only craft beers, or the craft beers you like."

 

Meh, I drink craft because it tastes good. Some macros taste good, too. I usually have a fridge full of new craft beers I have yet to try, so the macros don't have an opportunity too often, but I'll drink 'em.

To flip this conversation on its head, are we having something of a countermovement within the craft beer scene with a "I'll drink macros because I'm too cool to chase whalez"? Maybe the BMC drinkers are just too rebellious for us to comprehend.

I think people evolve, so some people may start out drinking craft because all the cool kids are doing it and they want to say they are doing it too. From this they may actually develop an affinity for it a decide to actually learn more about it. That being said, people should do what interests them and not try to impress their group of friends doing something they don't like to do.

 

Honestly, I think "nobody has ever drank craft beer to be cool" is a bit of a stretch. It is a fad right now and like any other fad you're gonna have a certain type of person who just wants to be seen doing it or want to feel like they belong to something. I've known people that hate scotch yet still bust out "that good single malt stuff" when their golf buddies are around and choke it down. I definitely wouldn't say that it's the majority of people but I do think that it happens

 

I manage a bottle shop with over 3,000 beers and alot of Marco drinkers think my staff and I are going to be judgey about their choices.. To be honest, handling all the craft beers is alot of fun but Macros keep my lights on and pay the rent!! We don't judge what you buy, just buy it here from us!!!

I totally understand the "craft is cool" thing as I see it every day, and it's not just hipsters. A lot of young guys have jumped on the bandwagon, and although they don't really know what they're talking about, it gives them something to say - when they're looking for anything to say - and "hating" is easy. Fortunately me and my King Cobra don't give a damn! ;P

 

i don't know 1 person who drinks craft or micro because it's cool..it's for one thing only...taste..and as far as a stigma attached to BMC beer..when did that start? i don't know anyone who puts any kind of stigma on anyone no matter what they drink..if you think Coor's Light is the best beer on the planet..more power to you..who the fuck is anyone to tell you otherwise.

I have the upmost respect for all beer. But I don't consider the swill BMC produces to be beer. If someone doesn't respect beer its those corporate monkeys at Bud dishing out disrespect to craft brewers and craft drinkers. So I refuse to ever support their attitude by purchasing their product or that of any other AAL corportation.

 

On a different (but related) note, if you don't think "coolness" matters in terms of what people think of beer, check out the first 50 or so reviews of NYFRB 5.9% when it was hard to get and then check out the most recent 50 now that it is "macro".

 

If anything I'm embarrassed by how much time and money I spend craft meeting and try to down play it. I don't judge people who drink BMC unless they attempt to explain why their beverage choice is inherently superior, but I would judge anyone who did this, regardless of their product of choice.

The things that make us seem "cool"within the craft beer community generally make us look like morons to those outside of it (and that's roughly 99% of the population).

 

I just drink beer because it makes me more appealing to the opposite sex.
Tequila makes me a better dancer.
