I purchased a 2 crowlers of Funky Buddha I'm so excited, I'm so scared 3-4 days ago. I put one in the fridge immediately. Today I noticed that the refrigerated can started to cave in (see pics below). When I touch it, the can feels very soft and the part of the can I touch becomes indented. The can is unopened.

Has anyone experienced this? I have never had this happen with a crowler before. Want to make sure that the beer is going to be okay once opened.

As long as its not leaking and is still sealed you should be fine. Had a crowler from Mike Hess and a crowler from San Tan both do this to me but both beers were fine when I opened them.

Maybe it wasn't quite full when sealed. When it was at ambient temp, it kept the gasses expanded. When the temp dropped, it condensed the gasses, which caused an internal vaccum. ? ? I've had half empty water bottles do the same when returned to fridge.

I have a crowler testing lab. We can check the contents and the can, unforntantly we can't send it back.

To be clear, this will not effect the quality of the beer, correct?

I wouldn't think so but I really don't know. As long as the can was still sealed, no air , no light all should be well.

If it's got some extra air in it, as suspected, I would drink it in the near future. Oxidation will set in much faster given that the oxygen is trapped in contact with the beer.

Pv=nrt. A reduction in temperature would correspond with a reduction in volume in a closed environment without external influence.

I don't agree. It actually would be slower due to reduced temperature and volume, thus less surface area of a liquid gas interface.

    Thanks for the responses everyone.

Cracking one open today, will let you know how it is.

The only 2 crolwers I've had were not completely filled. They were from a small MA brewery. I don't think they CO2 purge them either.

I hope the overall QC improves. I think it's a great format. Better than glass IMO.

Definitely let us know the outcome - would be helpful to know for those who experience the same problem in the future

I just had 2 from Dragoon. The one that sat in fridge longer seemed a little dented..I thought maybe it got knocked around in the fridge. Tasted just fine..

The statements regarding internal vacuum are correct. Expect some head space when you open it, probably a lot, since the gases contracting are causing the can to want to "collapse". The beer should be fine, but if the space is filled with air rather than CO2, it will be oxidizing. Air is about 21% oxygen.

Henry's law says more of the gases diffuse into the liquid at cooler temperature.

I think the bigger problem is you only put one of them in the fridge. Get the other one in there, cold slows down degradation.

The fact that the can indented means the seal is still intact. However I wouldn't let them sit for very long since they were underfilled and oxidation is a real possibility.
