I'm watching tv and after a couple commercials for hard cider and bud light, I realized I can't remember ever seeing a commercial for a craft brewery. Guys like Stone, Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada must have enough money to advertise on tv. Am I just missing it, or are there no craft commercials on tv?

Who can afford TV ads? Certainly not Neshaminy Creek, Tired Hands, Sly Fox, etc. (and they don't need them anyway).

Sam Adams does use TV because they see a major portion of their market demographic as being the folks new to the Hobby or seeking out flavorful beers for other reasons.

Sierra Nevada doesn't need to because they already sell as much as they make. (Same with Lagunitas.)

Not at all, especially for the crazy money they want.
    Perfect for NPR though.

I've seen commercials for Samuel Adams on TV, but that's all I can remember as far as "not actually owned by Bud/Miller/Coors" breweries showing up on TV. I have seen ads for Leinenkugel's shandies and I think maybe their Oktoberfest recently too, but since they're apparently owned by Miller I guess that wouldn't count.

I have heard ads for various local craft breweries (and also Sam Adams again) pop up between songs on Pandora radio, though -- I know there was one a while back for Devil's Backbone's Eight Point IPA, and I've also heard one for South Street Brewery's 365 Shandy a couple times earlier this summer. I suppose a sound-only ad (or even "sound + small graphic" like Pandora's ads) is a lot cheaper to make and buy space for than a TV ad, so that would make more sense for smaller breweries who don't have humongous Scrooge McDuck piles of cash lying around like the macro brewers do but still want to do some advertising.

I've seen tv commercials for local plumbers and electricians, beer distributors and car dealers. Tv time during national broadcasts on local stations can't be that expensive. But I agree, I don't think craft beer needs tv. They sell all they can make with little to no advertising. Other than print ads in beer scene magazines, craft breweries are getting by on word of mouth and, of course, websites like this.

Growth is so strong that they probably don't need to spend big bucks on TV ads.

Knowing BA's from this site, television would never highlight our subdued wit.

I will be curious to see if Lagunitas starts advertising on TV with the new merger with Heinekin...

Same reason why gourmet/non-chain restaurants don't need TV commercials.

Exactly. They don't need to. So why would they waste tons of money doing so? How well do you understand marketing???

Uhh... Yeah. If Star Wars was on regularly, then I'd argue why craft ISN'T advertising. But Football??? Waste of money.

The better medium to small breweries about max out on capacity and the ability to meet demand.

I used to see New Belgium commercials on TV in Portland all the time about 11 years ago. All of the ones I remember were set to Devendra Banhart songs. Here's one of the long ones:

I was only 22 at the time, and I have to admit, they were very effective. My wife and I were dating at the time and we still associate Fat Tire with the positive memories connected to those commercials.

I'm more surprised there are no real guerilla ad campaigns popping up. Craft can't afford tv but also seem ill equip to launch any real alternate ad campaign at all.

Creating false scarcity is the best thing they have. Sadly, it works. Probably why we don't see much else.
