My wife is not much of a beer drinker. That being said there are times she and her friends will go through my beers and open them when I'm not home or not around to approve the bottle for general consumption. This resulted in one of my two NG R&D bramble berry bourbon barrel being opened and subsequently drunk without me there.

What were some of the best beers you've had opened w/o your permission by friend or loved one?

Fortunately, I won't have to worry about this problem until / unless my dog learns how to get at the bottle opener.

My wife doesn't drink beer, let alone much alcohol at all. There are times that I wish she could share in a really good beer with me, but at thre end of the day I'm glad she doesn't and there's more for me!

No one would ever just happen into my actual beer cellar in my basement, but when offering beer from my beer fridge, I usually just say "Feel free to grab any beer there is more than one of..."

Many years ago (early '80s), living in the southern tier of NY state, my SO went to Boston for a conference and brought back a single bottle of Anchor Liberty Ale. At the time, Anchor was not well-distributed on the east coast, and it was the first Liberty Ale I'd ever seen. It was in a communal refrigerator and my buddy's father-in-law grabbed it when he went for a beer. I made a face :grimacing: to my SO and she just kinda shrugged with a "Ah, what can you do? Let the old guy drink your beer." attitude.

My buddy saw the silent exchange, asked what was going on and said, "Hey, man, if you went into his wine cellar and grabbed a bottle he didn't want you to drink, he'd sure as hell say something!"

The Liberty Ale was saved that day, and consumed by me later - ASAP! :grinning:

I brought a six pack of Westbrook Gose to a family gathering last week. And I wanted to share them with six people. One of those people being my little brother. He really liked it, and behind my back opened another. Then he got upset at me for getting upset with him because I told him he could have ONE. He didn't believe me when I told him it was impossible to find a six pack of that beer at a gas station...

Thankfully my wife knows beer and subsequently knows what's for general consumption.

Pretty big dick move there imo. If you don't know what you're doing, you're not going to reach for a beer like that. So they likely knew that it was a fairly limited beer and drank it anyway.

The simplest solution would seem to be to have two separate areas to keep your beer, one of which is 'off limits '.I guess I have it like that now, but not out of necessity.

It happened to me at a Party once, long ago, Schneider Aventinus.....XD
But otherwhise, my parents are WAY TO CAUTIOS:wink: When I bring them beer for them to drink, they leave it in their fridge FOR ME. I always say "when I put beer in your fridge, it means it is FOR YOU to drink soon", since it is mostly local IPAs and other stuff that does not tend to sit so well.

My wife's beer is on a different shelf than mine. We NEVER touch each others beer without permission.
    End of story !

This is generally not a problem, because I mostly drink with neighbors, and the three of them are IPA-only sorts...so I need not fear anything. I have another friend, who only drinks Bud Light at home, and who mind you shows up empty-handed when he comes over with his wife (my wife's best friend). Because we are good hosts we buy Bud Light for both of them. Anyway, he usually dabbles when he comes over - and tends to reach for dark beers. Last week he opened a 2010 BCBS, which he hated (but drank). I told him he can drank anything I have, but should ask me first, as I'll be able to steer him away from beers I know he wont like. So I step away to take a piss and I come back and he is prying open a 2010 Victory Old Horizontal. Now granted, I'm not into cellaring, as I typically enjoy beer near fresh, but I do have some experiments going to test my judgement. Needless to say he had to muscle through that beer too.

As you can see, nothing that would upset the average sort here, as these are mainstreamed beers, but that is my example

I see this at parties once and awhile. Usually a full IPA sitting right next to the cooler or fridge and it stays there for hours.

I've found that it is never a good idea to tell my wife something is off limits!
