Of course Dales Pale Ale isnt the only beer that creates ambiguity in style but I had to pick one example. According to the Beer Judge Certification Program, its outside the range of what an american pale ale should be by a considerable margin. Not to mention Oskar Blues just released an "IPA" with slightly less ABV and similar IBUs and call that an IPA, meanwhile Dales is a Pale Ale. Word has it that when they made this beer they made an IPA but the name "Dales Pale Ale" stuck and thats what we have today, what do you guys think about this? Is Dales Pale Ale really a Pale Ale?

Have always considered it an IPA IMO. At least by taste

IMO Dales Pale Ale is an IPA; it is of higher ABV than I expect for an APA and frankly it tastes like an IPA to me.

I just want to emphasize the "O" part above: opinion.

    Cheers!

I've only had DPA once and a long time ago, but i think its classified as an APA because its malt fwd. Could be wrong...

Never had it, now I'm interested if it's really a pale ale.

Why do they call it a pale ale?

You answered your own question. Dale's Pale Ale had a better ring to it. That's all it is.

It is an IPA. They don't label it as one because they like the rhyme of Dales Pale Ale. That simple. It's always been an IPA, but callingit a Pale has helped teach another generation of beer drinkers that Pales are supposed to be hop bombs too.

Let's hope the OP from the "angry retailers" thread doesn't show up here. He'll tell us we're all stupid for asking the question.

I've always thought of it as an IPA for all intents and purposes.

It's a really good beer, easy to drink, so who cares about the name/classification? Go check out Brevard and you'll begin to understand the allure of these southern mountains.

Yup. Dale's IPA doesn't rhyme. Only reason.

Yep, just as FFF named Zombie Dust a Pale Ale despite 6.2% ABV and 60 IBU.

Could have just called it "Dale's Ale" and wouldn't be as confusing, still rhyme and still could put in small print under it IPA to tell the style.

You need to correct this oversight immediately, for a fresh Dales poured from a cold can is a thing of beauty.

Dales India Pale Ale rhymes. Kind of. Or Dales India Pale Ales. Or Dale India Pale Ale.

It's neither an IPA nor an APA, it's more of an enigma....
