I'm hoping somebody might be able to shed light on this. This weekend I opened up a bottle of Battle Priest (#116) and it was undrinkable: acetone, pool water, no real traces of what this beer was supposed to taste like aside from some faint wine barrel flavor. Nobody could finish their glass. Coincidentally, some friends of mine opened a separate bottle (#316) and they all said it was fantastic: funky yeast, juicy hops, subtle barrel character, an all-around solid beer.

These are all people whose opinions I trust and they had no reason to lie to me about it, so my question is: has anybody had the same experience I had with Battle Priest?

There were 2 different barrels, fwiw.

EDIT: Sounds like I'll be drinking my #400something and trading my #200something..

Just don't bring it up to FFF's. They will probably charge you another $30 for complaining about their beer!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they didn't blend the two barrels. I'm guessing they probably took a few sixtels for festivals, and then filled 1-2?? from one barrel and 2??-480 from the other barrel.

Two wine barrels yield a maximum of 450L, which is good for 480 bottles plus a few kegs depending on how much evaporation occurred.

Much as I like Three Floyds, I have to wonder if they took samples out of each barrel and thought, "well, we're not gonna dump this barrel...but we're not going to blend it with the good one, either."

I'm pretty sure that's what they did with BA Owde Engwish. Some bottles and kegs smelled like nail polish remover while others were excellent. But why risk creating two mediocre-to-bad barrels? You're not going to blend out 'off' flavors with only two barrels to work with....

They were blended together. We haven't come across any bad bottles on our end yet, they've all been pretty fantastic.

Consider opening more. The reason I started this thread was that the bottle 116 of Battle Priest was probably the worst-tasting beer I've ever had.

My bottle was great and it was #97, albeit before the official release

You're part of the reason why I'm so dumbstruck, Al. Your review was solid, and I'd consider you a trustworthy reviewer. If they were blended (not that I don't believe theburden), why was the bottle you had awesome when the bottle I had tasted like chlorine and nail polish remover?

Was Biggs' 'stache blended as well?

Which is even more confusing because it was 100% brett, no lacto or anything that should throw aceto into the mix.

While Frank thought this was supposed to be funny, it was actually a moderately serious question. I've had countless 3 Floyds bottles since 2005, and tried numerous recipes from them and I've never encountered something that was unintentionally 'infected'. Out of the 100+ different beers I've had from them I'd say less than 5 were unequivocally 'bad', which is a staggeringly high success rate.

While I initially assumed that Biggs' 'stache just had out-of-control acetobacter throughout the batch, there is enough variance in the reviews to show this isn't totally true. If the beer was blended (or only had one barrel to begin with), it suggests an introduction of souring bacteria later in the production process (bottling?) rather than two barrels merely having different levels of acidity.

None of the other barrel-aged beers (cognac, bourbon, port) from 3 Floyds seem to be 'off' in any way, so these seems specific to wine barrels. I'm sure they'll figure things out in time - we just hold them to a ridiculously high standard because their beers are generally awesome.

Yes, this. For an outsider, it would be forgivable to think that Chicagoland BA's hate their locals. Really, we just expect greatness and being from the block doesn't get you a pass.

That, and Battle Priest was $35.

They still have more Baller Stout - perhaps you can do a trade-in?

I'm planning on bringing my bottle of Biggs' 'stache to Jackie O's on the 18th. I'll make sure you get a pour :grinning:
