@Cooper925 If you get to the Wies'n by about 11-12 am you shouldn't have any problem. I don't know your plans, but I would recommend staying in tent for a few hours and you'll probably have seen enough by 4 pm It can get ugly after about 5-6 pm. Do yourself and your wife a favor by not just hanging out in the tent all day. Check out the sights and food around the fest for the "all-around" experience.

My perennial suggestion is the Teufelsrad. Nothing like it in the States.

    But not-after-the-day-in-the-tent! :grinning:

I remember watching my friends make the bad decision to take a ride on one of the tilt-a-whirls (or some-such) on our way out of the fest one evening... wasn't pretty. :grimacing:

Read thru this whole thread, there is great advice from veterans of the Fest that will answer your questions. I wouldn't worry about getting into one of the tents in early or mid-afternoon unless it's raining, but I'm a little concerned about your accommodations with such a last-minute decision to go to Munich during the Fest. Most of the hotels book up 6 months in advance, what's your plan?

..and they will be 3x more expensive than usual.

    Good Luck!

    This is funny:
Entschuldigung, ist hier wohl noch ein Platz frei fur mich und meine Freunde? ??

I always used a very enthusiastic, Noch frei? And nearly always received an equally enthusiastic, JA! :grinning:

Thanks for the tips so far everyone!

I made a cancelable reservation on one that was within a 15 minute walk of the tents for roughly $300 per night. Not great, but the cheapest I could find with still pretty good reviews. I also tentatively reserved a hotel in Dachau for much much cheaper and figured it wouldn't be too terrible of a train ride over...thoughts?

I've booked outside the city to save money in the past.... as far away as Augsburg and Murnau.... Dachau isn't that bad of a ride...

The bonus of being within distance to the Wies'n is that you're basically within reach of everything. Friday arrival means wandering around downtown and getting some great feel for downtown Munich and a dinner and fall into bed. Downside is obviously the price - I guess it kinda depends on your wallet and how adventurous you and your wife are to take public transportation, which is excellent.

I lived for 2 years in Gräfelfing and the S Bahn trip into the city was always great, and also took about 20 minutes. Don't be afraid of travelling train, but being downtown has it's perks too.

I know it's a few days early, but I had more than my fair share of Augustiner Oktoberfesbier from wooden barrels last Friday evening, so I'm already off to the races.
    Here are the first two:

As you can see the Spaten is a shade or two darker than the Augustiner and has a more spicy/hoppy/bitter flavor(that part you can't see.) The sweet malts from the Augustiner always win out for me early in the season but usually by late October/early November, if I still have any left, I enjoy the richer flavor of the Spaten. Extended Italian summers might have something to do with that though...

Hacker Pschorr Oktoberfest Maerzen will be up next one of these days.

Despite the "buzz" and love for Augustiner in München, I always thought the Paulaner was the best available from the Big 6. Kenner raten, trinke Spaten.

Business forces me to Italy but the end of the week is frei so off to Munchen for the 24 & 25th. Found a single in the V-market area for $99 a night so my luck is holding out so far. Always said I wouldn't go just for Oktoberfest but hey, business is business...

Are the favs in Munchen packed too or will they be less busy?

Well, off this eve from BOS via FRA to NUE.... there one day, then 20-23SEP in München.... After that, 4 days in Bamberg and environs, then 5 days (28SEP-02OCT) in Maastricht.... Speaking of Nürnberg, anyone ever attend the Altstadtfest, which is going on now through ~27SEP? It's a real nice time.... They have 2 main areas where stands/small buildings are set up with food and Biergartens, and various musicians, jugglers, etc perform around the old city center.... I've been with my kids way back (as well as solo often), when they were in the 4-7 age frame. They had a riot with facepainting and playing street hockey! They have various local offerings, like Altstadthof, Schanzenbräu, Lederer, and smaller area brewers..... I'll be hitting that tomorrow (19SEP)...

If anyone's in München and/or Bamberg on those dates, give a shout...

    Prosit!!!

for the festival the "Oide Wiesn" is worth a visit. is the "old" style octoberfest, with ceramic mass and old games. is nice and ussualy less crouded.

go to the paulaner brauhaus, not far from where octoberfest is, is esentially a brewpub, they always have special beer. right now probably unfiltered octoberfest beer. had some last year and it was very good. in the summer they had a hoppy weissbier that was great. Also they have pretty good bavarian food try the duck. . http://www.paulaner-brauhaus.de/

Giesinger brewery is also word a visit. good beer (mix of craft and german beers). love their unfiltered helles. food is good too. http://www.giesinger-braeu.de/#_=_

agustiner keller is a very nice beer garden close to the main train station. , maybe full but worth the visit (IMO).

getranke oases is a good beerstore if you want to buy german beer, specially bavarian beer from small breweries. is close to a u bhan station. theresianstrasse (U2). http://www.getraenke-oase-schwabing.de/

biervana has more craft beer, both germaan and american if you need an IPA or some american sour, also they have newly arrived Cantillon, plus most of the other lambics (3F for example). http://www.biervana.eu/

    enjoy
