Well, just tasted Victory's new Hoppy Quad on draft at the brewery in Downingtown. It's truly one of hoppiest big beers brewed with a Belgium yeast that was attenuated to 13% abv that I ever tasted. One of brewers told me they used the most hops ever in creating this Victory beer.

You can get a growler or purchase 750-ml cork and caged bottles. Enjoy!

Hoping this makes it out west. We usually get most Victory offerings. Hoping this is one!

I picked up a bottle on Tuesday for $9.90. It's definitely in the York area.

Does it compare, or is it at all similar to the odd year Stone release of their Old Guardian BELGO? I know a Quad and a Barley Wine are two different animals but this being hopped up may blur the hell out of that line.

Looking at the pictures posted on untappd, that's the lightest looking quad I've ever seen. Looks like a tripel. Considering I've never been impressed with any Belgian-inspired beer from Victory, I'm not looking forward to this. The idea just doesn't sound appealing to me either. A tripel might make more sense to turn into a hop bomb, then again it looks like a tripel. I wonder what their grain bill was.

Actually yeah, I just found this picture. Certainly not a "Quad" grain-bill. Very odd to give it that name.

Ha! By all means, please bash this beer before you even taste it, thats what we do around here. But seriously how many Tripels do you find at 13%?

BTW, Golden Monkey won a Gold in the Tripel category at last years GABF.

How many Quads have you seen that look like this one? Nobody is bashing it. Just stating that it doesn't look like a Quad. And Golden Monkey used to be good, before they started over-hopping it.

Nice! What about V-12 Quad? Will we or do we see that at all in Chicago as well?

I didn't bash the beer. I said it doesn't LOOK like a Quad. Triples can have a noticeable hop profile fresh whereas you don't see that with a Quad. That's why i made those comments. Anyways, how many Quads do you find at 13% for that matter? 9%-11% with a rare occasional US Quad at 12%-14%.

I didn't judge the beer yet, but I can judge beer from Victory that I have had and I generally don't 'get' what people see in them. I give them credit for being there early on, but I just haven't been impressed with any of their beers, including their Belgian inspired stuff. As for Golden Monkey, I've had it on several occasions and in my opinion it's average (at best) in terms of an American Tripel but can't even come close to the real deal.

Then why not label it a "Belgian-style Strong Pale Ale" or something similar?

When most beer consumers see the word "Quad", they are thinking dark malt flavors. That's what I assumed before I saw the pictures. The beer may be setting false expectations, that's all. Or actually may be losing potential buyers that are fans of pale beer that don't like dark malty beers -which I would think Victory would not want. Seems odd.

I really do want to try this, but agree that the naming convention seems odd. I guess I'll find out if the taste echos anything quad-like.
