So here's my question... there are supermarkets (or other establishments) that have designated sections of singles for "make your own six packs", usually at or around a $9.99 price. I know we all have thoughts on the "past its prime stock" that sometimes ends up in these areas, but what do you think of the people who take items out of other four or six packs (usually of higher priced items) outside of the designated section to include as part of their six pack, leaving behind a less than desirable three or five pack (or less) behind for the next person?

Purposely grabbing a bottle from a section which is not eligible for a mix six pack? I see this behavior as incredibly poor form. Yes, the stores should do a better job of marking the eligible bottles (Binny's do a good job it seems) but c'mon people, buy the f&$kn six pack if you want that beer.

Who would do that? Really, guys would do this? You'll get away with it, but you should be embarrassed. Just no.

a reason why I usually shop at places that break up all their packs into singles

Kinda sounds like stealing to me.
Just picked up a mix 6 at Wegmans where they've recently starting marking the tops of the bottles in the mix section with purple marker. Pretty sure all the beers are no more than 2 months old too.

Seems incredibly slimy (yet oddly clever) to me but I'm sure there are people who do it.

To those people: Smarten the f*** up! You're putting honest people out of good beer.

Sounds like theft to me. I take a dim view of it. A pox on those who do it, may all their beer be skunked for all the days of their lives.

Agree 100%, on both the store's diligence and the person's accountability. I have seen it on multiple occasions at this location (not the actual act, just the result), and while I am not surprised, it's disappointing to see.

It's definitely in poor taste to do that. And as previous posts have mentioned probably classifies as some type of theft

    Here's my recent experience.

My local supermarket has a mix a six section that includes local beer. While the rest of their selection is pretty weak, their local brewery's beer is consistently fresh. So here's the deal, a double IPA brewed by the local brewery retails at $10 a four pack. They keep this stocked as fresh singles in the mix a six section right next to the four packs. So here I am just noticing that a mix a six is only $10. Awesome right? I can just pack the whole six pack with DIPA's and I'll get $15 worth of beer for $10.

But when I go to fill the six pack there are only 4 DIPA's there in the singles section. Now right next to it there are 4 packs of the exact same beer of the same date in their boxes. So, do I lift two out of the new box and place them in mine only to leave the old box with two or put the two new singles on the single shelf?

The answer: I didn't do either of those things. The beers that were available were clearly in the six pack selection section. It's not my choice to decide what beer is available for mixing, that choice belongs to the store. For all I know they have a quota of how many of that DIPA they are allowed to place on the single shelves in a week and I could be hurting their sales.

So I put two other beers from the mix a six section and essentially got those for free since I would have bought the 4 pack anyways. The point here is follow the rules and down be a twat. A week later I went back to look again and sure enough 8 DIPA's available. Filled it up a mixer with 5 DIPA's and one other new beer for the hell of it.

While you may say I used a loophole to get cheaper beer, but I still acted within the guidelines they set. You choose to shop there and they get to choose there rules. Break those rules and you're just shoplifting.

Yeah same here, I have gone crazy twice at my local kroger, once when it was loaded up with 4 Tank 7, the second time they had out 4 Hop Delusion. Both of these retail for $10 a 4pack. So I grabbed all 4 +2 more random beers I have never tried. Those other 2 were basically free. I now go to Kroger at least once a week for y lite shopping trip to see what else they have mistakenly thrown on that shelf

This is a dickhead move that I do not practice but I find it hard to feel any sympathy for the store owners that charge $9 per bottle of KBS or $12 per 120 minute

The bottle shop that I frequent literally tags every bootle or can that is not included in the "mix a six" promotion. It must be an incredible amount of work for the staff but I suppose it cuts down on these type of shenanigans.

The last time I bought a case of 120 it was almost $190. That's about $8 a beer. Most places around here charge $9.99 a bottle. $12 is a bit high but not outrageous. Should stores sell beer at cost or just over to keep you happy or sell to stay in business?

    Enjoy

Where as I would not take a beer from a six pack that is not included in the mix a six, the people that do it actually improve my mix a six selection. The Wegmans I go to have $12 mix six packs (If I recall correctly), and will only load in beers for the mix a six selection that are under $2.00 per bottle or can. If someone breaks up a higher priced six or four pack, the remaining beers end up in the mix a six selection area by default, because they cannot sell them. Puts me in an odd position, because I think the person that selects from higher priced six packs is a prick, and I also want to thank them at the same time.

It depends on the store policy. If store policy is that they're fine with you creating a mixed pack in such a manner then it's perfectly acceptable behavior. If store policy is that larger packs are not to be broken into singles then it isn't acceptable behavior.

I suppose my displeasure of beer prices should include brewery msrp as well as certain bottle shop markups. No way in hell does 120 warrant a price tag of $10 in terms of ingredients . That beer is priced high based on alcohol content and hype, not taste or rarity

    Enjoyed

120 was 9.99 in 2006. At that abv I'm pretty sure there are a LOT of ingredients add in it's a hard beer to make, thus dogfish dumping out multiple batches. It's not that good or worth the price from an enjoyment stand point, but there's no way in hell it's over priced in the beer world. Go look at the prices of most bombers....hell per oz it's cheaper than a LOT of those!
