From Schelkerla I have had the Helles, Marzen and Ürbock and picked up a Doppelbock yesterday. Mind-blowing style IMO, and definitely a new favorite for me. The Schlenkerla Helles is a spiritual experience.

Had Sixpoint's rauchbier for the first time last week. Weird thing was the beer menu didn't say what the name was. It just said Sixpoint. I looked on their website and an article about "Brothers Quinn Rauchbier" showed up, but the beer I had was much darker in color than the pics on this article. Anyone know what beer I had?

I had sam adams bonfire when it was around a couple years ago. I don't know how close it is to an authentic German example, but I remember not enjoying it very much. The sweet smokiness was nice at first but I remember it just being too much after a while. I had pretty much the same experience with Alaskan smoked porter. Maybe I'll give it another shot if I can find one of the highly rated ones.

I love cooking with Aecht marzen. It's amazing for making bead and pizza dough. When I drink them I have to pair with food, just way too over bearing without it.

Generally speaking I will go for a German rauchbier over just about any other beer. It is my favorite style when done well. The Schlenkerla line of beers is amazing.

To me Smoke & Dagger from Jack's Abby comes off more of a hyrid smoked Schwarzbier than a Rauchbier..

    It is a polarizing style.

Your example is high on the abv.

I could drink Schlenkerla Maerzen all day, everyday.

I say yes, I'd drink Rauchbier regularly; were it available, I'd love more Aecht Märzen. 4 pack, please.

Here's how I enjoy them: I smoke a cigar with them. The smoke in the cigar completely covers and conceals the smoke flavor in the beer and I'm able to taste the flavors underneath.

And not like bacon- just the purest malt flavors underneath the smoke.

Love those beers. They need to be fresh, should like a camp fire, not bacony.

I guess I should also state that it tastes like bacon TO ME which is completely fine. I'm not going to get into a whole huge debate on something subjective. I don't have the time or the patience

i do love a good rauchbier, but i tend to prefer smoked beers instead of rauchbier (the difference being rauchbier are traditionally of the Märzen style or similar lager). My favorites have been, piggy-ing on what @beerchic said, Evil Twin's Ashtray Heart, The Bruery / Beachwood BBQ's Mrs. Stoutfire, The Bruery's Smoking Wood (particularly the Coffee variant), and Speakeasy's Smokonut as well as their Smoked Payback Porter.

Depending on the intensity of the smoke character, I'm a one and done drinker. Ashtray Heart is ridiculously smokey. If you were to take malt, smoke it in a BBQ smoker for 12 hours, blend it with the charcoal ashes along with the ashes of a carton's-worth of cigarettes and marinate them for a month in liquid smoke, you'd come close to the smokiness of Ashtray Heart.

For those who don't like Schlenkerla märzen try the Spezial Rauchbier if you can find it. It's more tame and less smokey. The Spezial bier garden is on top of the mountain in Bamberg and was worth the climb. I am a big fan Schlenkerla, having it poured from wooden barrels at the brewery's bar was a cool experience.

For the American smoked beers try Alaskan brewing companies smoked Porter.

I love Rauchbier. But after one or two, no amount of water and bread can clean my tounge for a non-smoked beer.Yesterday, after 2 Rauchbiers, I had a standard, non smoked Dunkles, and even with 2 liters of water in between, it felt smokey:wink:

I agree, I like Smoke and Dagger a lot but I was surprised when I saw it classified as a Rauchbier, because to me it was more like a slightly smokey black IPL or something.

I did just pick up a bottle of Fire in the Ham from JA too.
