I am not talking about craft beers because these aren't known beyond the growing, but still fairly small number of people that consider themselves craft beer fans.

I am talking about the macros, who through sheer marketing prowess are able to sell a lot of beer at inflated prices.

For me, the undisputed King of this group is Heineken. I believe it was the first euro beer to be aggressively marketed and sold in the US. Heineken has been bombarding the airways, or cableways today, I guess, with advertisement for as long as I can remember. And I am an old bastard! And the result is, it is considered a premium beer among the unwashed masses that just don't know any better.

If Heineken was a good beer, I wouldn't have an issue with this, but, let's face it. It is skunky pisswater. Tastes like you took a proper beer and put it in the trunk of your car for a few years. Somewhere, I seem to recall having someone tell me that the Heineken served in europe is much better. Is this so?

I read somewhere that the Heineken "imported" here is brewed here by AB

The long-time US importer of Heineken, Van Munching & Co. (whose owner, Leo Van Munching, began importing the Dutch beer right after Repeal), was long known as a very conservative company and for most of that period their advertising was mostly B&W print ads in upscale magazines. They only began using color ads and TV advertising in the early 1970s. After Van Munching was sold to the Heineken International around 1990 (and, not coincidentally, during the period in which Corona rose to compete and finally top Heineken in sales) their advertising increased greatly in the US.

For much of the period between Repeal and the mid/late-70s (when Miller began brewing the brand under license in the US) - except for WWII and the immediate post-War era - Löwenbräu and Heineken were often running neck and neck in sales in the US, but Heineken has long been among, if not the, best-selling imported beers in the US. Even today, with Corona easily the largest selling import, Heineken is still #2 (with about half of Corona's sales) although Constellation's Modelo Especial is rising quickly - mght even be #2 by now. Heineken sales have no doubt also been hurt by the increased popularity of Stella Artois, another Euro lager which is aimed at the same market segment.

So, the largest brewer in the US and the second largest importer are violating US TTB labeling regulations?

Worst macro for me is Carta Blanca. A popular beer in the northeast region of Mexico (I live in the northwest).

I remember, years ago, buying a six pack of this beer because I was low on cash and it was cheaper than the rest of the beer available.

It was so bad I ended burying them in the ice chest at the party I was at. Never knew what happened to that beer.

Bud Light... tons of advertising, shitty beer, SOOOOO many people drink it, $7 per sixer is at least double what it should cost... I think that describes what you were looking for... end of thread?

Every now and then a cold Heineken hits the spot, especially so if I'm doing a rack of ribs. Cans only, I stay away from bottles. If it's stored properly and now a year old it's pretty good for what it is, a bit nostalgic too, at one time if you didn't want Bud and wanted higher end you went Lowenbrau or Heineken. That's all there was in 1980.

Not sure what an over rated Macro would look like, they all are what they are.

Bud light platinum. No difference between that and light. And around here ( beach/island vacation area, i am a local year round) Landshark. Too sweet for me.

Well, knowing full well that there were lots of regions of the US then where imports were practically non-existent  (hell, I had an off-premise license for a store 15 miles from the St. Lawrence River and I couldn't sell any "expensive" Canadian beer - and even some of these imports tended to have strong "regional" sales within the US) but, for the record, the Top Ten Imported Beers* in 1980:
    1. Heineken
    2. Molson
    3. Beck’s
    4. Labatt
    5. Dos Equis
    6. Moosehead
    7. St. Pauli Girl
    8. Carta Blanca
    9. Guinness-Harp
    10. [tied] Grolsch / Fosters
    * actually beer brands, since several of these brewers
had a number of different beers in the US market)

Missing is Löwenbräu - which by then was a domestically-brewed, adjunct lager beer brewed under license by Miller.:grimacing:

Heineken out of the can is actually drinkable, definitely better than the skunky bottles...I'd say Corona(if you have to put a lime in your beer to make it drinkable, it's likely not a good beer) Bud Light and Miller Lite are probably the worst "beers." All marketing.

Of those beers on your list I've enjoyed them all at one time or another , except Moosehead, a real high skunk factor on that one. My dads current beer is Labatt Blue, Imo it's better than Bud, Miller and the like, head and shoulders better than Bud Light and such. I wouldn't mind an original Schmittys brewed in Philly today, a bit of nostalgia there.

When we were underage 17 years old , Lowenbrau, st pauli, moosehead molson, and becks dark were extremely good. Now cant touch any of them. We even drank Schlitz and miller ponis. Best beer back in the 70,s was Michelob, couldnt get enough.

I don't know whenever I drink platinum it tears my stomach up. I do think it is better than a lot of macros though.

rochefort 10, I've only had it once and didn't care for it. I'll definitely be revisiting it, but just don't understand the love for this beer.
