My wife and I are going to be celebrating our 10th anniversary next year. We will be taking a trip somewhere that is fun for both of us. We are both foodies, and love beer (ok, I love it more than her). We've narrowed our choices down to these two cities (we went to San Francisco/Napa for our 5th). I need some help to be swayed in either direction, what say you?

Boston. My answer is most likely biased, but if you were on the west coast (san fran) for your past trip, may as well head in the other direction.

Boston is great in the fall. Tons of foliage that time of year. I've never been to San Diego, by Boston has a little bit of everything. If you like seafood, it's hard to beat.

If you are into visiting breweries, the brewery scene in the San Diego area is superior to Boston.

Both cities have good sightseeing opportunities. I highly recommend the San Diego zoo if you choose to go to San Diego.

    Cheers!

What time of year is said anniversary? I think that would play into your decision. Winter time San Diego would be a no brainer. I have west coast bias so I'll say San Diego.

My wife is from Boston and we live an hour from San Francisco and frequent both. If you are not traveling in the winter, then I vote to go to Boston. City kick ass and is just down right fun.

My only word of warning, be careful of the brewery/tap room scene in Boston. Alcohol laws are weird and not all places can serve a pint of beer, just a taster.

When it comes to MA you should understand this: Our best breweries (treehouse, trillium, etc.) are the least scenic. Sams and moreso Harpoon are cool places to visit but the beer is anywhere from meh to slightly above average.
Come next year when you come out though Jack's Abby will be in their new facility that opens soon about a half hour outside the city and Trillium will be in a more consumer-friendly spot as opposed to the hallway they sell out of now. Treehouse is ~2 hours west of Boston and is super hectic and not even close to a tourist destination.
North end is littered with great restaurants and the general area is great for exploring, a lot of history out here. Sox games have never been cheaper (directly porportional to how much we've sucked of late) but Fenways always a good time.
You guys already did Cali, why not try something different?

Within 2 - 4 hours of Boston you have some of the best breweries on the east coast. Maine and Vermont do it right. I would make Boston your home base and travel a bit around New England. Trillium, Medusa, Wormtown, Hill Framstead, Maine Beer Co, Vermont Brewery Bus tour,... If you are near Worchester MA, hit Armsby Abby for dinner - killer selection on tap and in bottle.

San Diego, all the breweries are close and you can hit many while here including Orange county (The Bruery) Either way itll be fun im assuming. Best of luck in deciding. Cheers and congrats on the anniversary

San Diego all day long. And that's coming from a Vermonter who went to college in Boston. Breweries are more accessible. The beaches are amazing. Food is fresh and cheap. Fish Tacos and Habanero Sculpin FTW.

Now just you wait a minute there, Jack...

Just kidding - I'm not going to go all defensive Boston on you because I haven't been to San Diego for beercation. Plus I don't like driving into or anywhere around Boston myself, at risk of losing my permit to live here.

I would assume the "density" of good breweries is much greater in San Diego than it is here in the Northeast, but if you expand your geography a bit beyond the city of Boston, there's a ton of great breweries to see and a big variety of scenery to go along with it. Thinking of the region versus just the city where I would completely agree - not a lot of breweries to experience without wheels. Boston could be a decent base of operations, but I would probably opt out of the city just to save on the expenses - you can eat and sleep just as well outside the city, in my opinion, and not have to deal with the city every time you want to go somewhere.

That said, October can be iffy around here for weather - when its good you can't beat it but when it's bad it's evil. And honestly except for the ocean, real mountains, probably more old forests - the geography isn't too much different than Wisconsin and I have spent a significant amount of time in Badgerland and it feels much like home.

I was in San Diego many years back for a few weeks of classwork, and I recall traffic...lots and lots of traffic....but it was absolutely perfect weather every day and I think it is pretty much that way all year long. And yes - the San Diego Zoo is absolutely awesome.

I think it depends on what you want to do - stay in one place and be able to visit a lot in a short time without a vehicle, or be mobile and explore the region.

Will be??? You mean it isn't now the way this team has been playing :slight_frown:

Guaranteed you will have a blast in San Diego. I'm pretty sure Boston doesn't have world class beaches AND world class breweries.....
