I was at Tired Hands over the weekend and tried their Seasonal IPA. I love everything that Tired Hands does, but I was a bit hesitant to try an IPA that was brewed with spiced squash, vanilla, ginger, and cinnamon (not to mention Citra and Simcoe) just because it wasn't something I'd seen very often. It turned out to be the best beer that I had that evening (and I had quite a few), incredibly balanced and supremely interesting.

There's a lot of talk about regular pumpkin ales, obviously, but do you guys have any recommendations or experience with pumpkin/squash IPAs that are worthy of a try? Something with equal parts pumpkin/spice and hop presence?

This is why IPA is no longer a style

North Peak Hooligan and Flying Dog The Gourd Standard are the only ones I've had..

Do you feel the same way about grapefruit IPAs? And does it really matter in the confines of this thread? I don't think so.

Beat me to it....was going to also mention these 2 - the FD Gourd Standard is new this year, and I found it quite tasty - better than Hooligan and more affordably priced

Sixpoint used to do one called "Autumnation" a few years back, which was billed as a "hoppy pumpkin", but the pumpkin kind of got lost in all the hops.....I enjoyed it though!

You may enjoy Smuttynose's Pumpkin - while not billed as a Pumpkin IPA, there is a nice hop balance there and it is one of my favorites - out of nearly 60 pumpkin beers I have tried over the past few years.

I liked Hooligan, but I don't recall it having much pumpkin spice going on.. Flying Dog is more what I'd expect from a "Pumpkin IPA".. it had a good balance between hops and spices..

I think he was being light with that comment

BTW, grapefruit IPAs are for children. Real men get their grapefruit flavor from hops
