I'd only use an online service to get access to beers that are not distributed to a local store. But, I'm not going to "join" their little club just to see if they have anything of interest.

Here's their response. Seems a little fishy to me, given the picture. Figured out how to do it. Thats the Ace of Spades Am I nuts?

    Hi Redacted,

Thanks for your note. The number that you are referring to and have in photos is the glass manufacturer's code number, not the bottling date of the beer inside. Hopworks Ace of Spades was packaged on July 30th, 2015, and has a shelf life of 180 days. I just got off the phone with the brewery to confirm this. The Great Basin Tectonic Event arrived in our warehouse on August 28th, 2015 right after it was packaged for us, and is still very, very fresh. These beers have been kept cold from the moment they arrived in our warehouse until they were shipped out.

We have a policy of only selling fresh beer, and would never buy, keep, or sell hoppy beer hat is more than a month or two in package, let alone from 2014. We started this company because we wanted to get fresh, great beer to been fans fast, not let them sit on the shelves.

I hope this helps ease your concerns. Please let me know if you have any followup questions.

I've had a good experience with Tavour so far, so I'd personally give them the benefit of the doubt. Seems like they are risking losing a customer by lying if that were the case. I'd contact Great Basin myself and see if the info straight from the source disagreed with what Tavour said. Then I'd give it the old taste test.

Contact Hopworks and see what they say in regards to the dating.

If it makes you feel any better, I just checked one of the bottles of Great Basin 404 Scytale I ordered from Tavour, and the bottle date indicates 2014 as well, even though it was a 2015 release (which is indicated on the label).

Report back here, I'd like to know as it would go a long way in determining what I order from them in the future. I've been avoiding IPAs purposely because I'm skittish about this type of thing.

Will do. Emailed Great Basin and tweeted HUB the picture to ask for clarification.

Local here to Great Basin...none of their bombers are bottle dated. Ksoze is correct...404 Scytle wasn't released until March 2015 I believe.

As far as I know (and I'm on their email list), you don't order from a list like most other sites. They send a daily email, telling you what beers are available that day. If you want the beers, you reply to the email, if not you delete. Then they ship to you once a month. I've not bought directly from them, but things I want, I tell a couple friends, and they add to their order. I've gotten good responses the couple times I've contacted them with questions. YMMV.

Question on the stouts---how was the shipping and prices? Living in Ohio I am more than curious on getting some good brews that are harder to find.

Lots of west coast stuff, with some other things sprinkled in. Every once in a while there is shelf stuff that shows up, but it's mostly beer that I wouldn't be able to get outside of trade or buying online from a store that ships and paying asinine shipping prices.

I am happy with it so far (have had 2 shipiments). Prices can be slightly marked up (a couple bucks), but there is a flat shipping fee of $14.90, so the more you order, the more it is worth it. You can also push back shipping a couple weeks if you want to add more beer to your box. I PM'd you a referral code since I didn't think it would be kosher in the thread if you're interested in trying it out.

Dude. I can guarantee that's the bottling manufacturer's number, not a HUB bottle date.

On a related note, I'd never recommend Tavour due to the shady shit they pulled shortly after opening, and for all I know may still be pulling.

They were hand bottling and labeling bombers of draft-only stuff like Boneyard hop Venom and Barley Brown's Pallet Jack against the brewer's wishes. Some folks will say that it's no different than filling a growler, but they were doing it with limited release beers that (according to the brewers) weren't supposed to be put in growlers because they felt it didn't properly represent their beer.

From what I recall having seen their list early on, they were also driving across the border to Oregon (they are or were based in Washington), buying things that aren't distributed in WA, and selling them on their site, which I'm pretty sure is a violation of the 3 tier laws in WA

I know a couple people like the owner of Boneyard told them to knock it the fuck off, so I don't know if they're still hand bottling shit they shouldn't be, but it left enough of a bad taste in my mouth that I want nothing to do with them.

I order IPAs and such from France44, the Surly stuff at least is always fresh stuff. I've ordered fresh stuff from Freddie before too, always fresh, but I ask dates first.

My buddy had issues ordering IPAs from Tavour and won't be doing so in the future. Personally I would never, especially after drinking the few they recommend you try. And the IPAs WERE old, several months old in fact. And no we did not contact them, we simply bit the bullet, took it in the shorts and have decided not to order IPAs from them again. Stouts and sours on the other hand, I have no issue. Aside from them recently sending me a "Prairie Bomb" email for $13 a bottle. Thats a ridiculous price imo

Well that's a good thing. It certainly appears through my experience and others that ppl should tread lightly with them.

To Tavour's credit Great Basin confirmed. Email below:

Thanks for the concern, but Tavour is correct that that is a bottle manufacturer code. Unfortunately we don't have the equipment to code individual bottles currently, so only full cases have a born-on date. That batch of Tectonic was bottled about 5 weeks ago (I can find the exact date if you'd like).
Fortunately, Tavour has been a great partner for us - I think each of the beers we have offered have spent less than a day in their facility before being offered - so there is no concern about the freshness.
I hope this helps, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we have been here in Reno.
    Cheers,
    Cameron
