I must admit, I've been a pumpkin beer hater for a decade, until this year. I happen to be married to a beautiful woman who works with beer suppliers and distributors, so she gets to bring home "samples" of pumpkin beers that I would never spend money on. Since, free is my second favorite "F" word I was delighted to give these beers a whirl, especially with no risk attached. I gotta tell you, some of these pumpkin beers are complex, earthy, and spicy...not to mention delicious. Pop Coronado Brewery's Punk'in Drublic or Belching Beaver's Pumpkin Spice Milk Stout and try not to like them, I dare you. What's your take on pumpkin beers?

I like pumpkin pie and some other pumpkin flavored things but very few pumpkins beers have actually been enjoyable for me. A lot of times it's not done well enough, the balance of spices is unpleasant, or it's just too sugary. The only one I've thought was pretty good so far was Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale but I've only had it once. Might have to revisit that one a little later in the season and see if my opinion is still positive..

I shared the same opinion also, too sweet or too spicy, but the craft brewers have really been stepping up their game lately and making that pumpkin a more subtle component. I also read that colonial brewers with little supplies were harvesting pumpkins for their mashes, creating a proletariat brew that now divides the craft brewing crowd. Love it or hate it, pumpkin beer is probably the most American beer you can drink.

Pumpkins are a polarizing beer for a lot of people. Personally, I really enjoy them but the same as other styles, different brewer's interpretations are hit or miss with me; my favorite style hands down is IPA's and my response is exactly the same.

I enjoy them once or twice a year during the proper season. They have a place on annual checklist.

Pumpkin brews are on the top of my list. They are something different and it goes great with the season. There are a few pumpkin brews I disliked. The most part they are good drinking brews.
If you like pumpkin pie you have to try river town pumpkin ale
UFO pumpkin was good as well.

Me too. When I first started tasting beer someone told me I would like pumpkin beer. I did not believe it. I really do. What I dislike is when the spices are too loud, particularly the cinnamon. When there is too much cinnamon it tastes like it has been sprinkled on the beer. When it's done well it can be a very pleasant flavor in the pumpkin ale.

Pumpkin beers are a great idea yet they fail most of the time.

I like almost anything pumpkin (except Starbucks recent attempt which has a strong squash aftertaste), and while I like the idea of a good pumpkin beer, I have not found one yet. I'm frustrated since I have read about a number of highly rated pumpkin beers I'd like to try, but they just don't seem to be available in South Dakota. A lot of beers mentioned on BA are available locally, but might have to make a run to Minneapolis/Omaha/Des Moines to find what I'm looking for.

I'm a fan of ones that aren't in your face pumpkin spice. Some that I enjoy are Two Roads Roadsmary's Baby and Uinta Oak Jack.

Never drink them or any other beers with flavoring ingredients, other than rye.

If you can't brew it with water, barley or rye, hops & yeast, I don't want it.

I enjoy them for the most part. Some are excellent (Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin) IMO. Some are terrible. The same can be said for any style. Usually only one an evening though due to the spice and sweetness.

I have been an ardent pumpkin ale fan for a number of years.....never understood why this style of beer should be "polarizing", any more than any other style of beer.....if you do not care for it, no worries....just move on to something else that you do like. No need to bash it.
Brewers are doing amazing things, with pumpkin porters, stouts, even barleywine beers with pumpkin. Those that associate pumpkin beer with a super sweet "cinnamon-sugar" bombs, are not really looking at the diversity of what is available these days.

Tis the season people, today is the first day of autumn.....crack open a pumpkin beer or 2 to celebrate!

So far, I'm not a fan. I don't mind the sweetness too much but I find the spices to be overpowering most times. I'll keep an open mind and keep trying them when offered, but I'm probably not going to search out and buy any myself.

I don't do pumpkin beer. I not only dislike them, but I also hate that they're taking away valuable resource (tank space) from other great beers. On the other hand, I know that it is a way for breweries to make money. If a couple months of pumpkin beers enables the brewery to make great beer the rest of the year, then I'm more inclined to accept it.

The marketing of pumpkin products in the fall is outrageous. Next time you hear a Dunkin radio ad, listen to hear how many times the word "pumpkin" is mentioned. It's sickening.
