Just curious to know how others handle their beer reviews over time. For instance, I looked at some of my highest rated beers in my BA portfolio and I was surprised that so many beers from earlier in my BA life have really high ratings compared to the harder scale I now judge newer, perhaps more boundary pushing brews.

For instance, I gave an enthusiastic 4.75 to Hoponious Union from Jack's Abby in early 2013 when I thought that beer was a mind blower. But since then, I've had many other IPAs (or IPLs to be technical) that simply blow it out of the water, but my scale for judgement is so askewed by things like Trillium, Comrade Brewing, and Russian River (and many others) over the course of my development as a beer advocate. Perhaps this is a hop head quandry as many of the other styles I look back on hold their weight.

How do others revisit their old reviews? Do you adjust your previous beers as new brews blow your mind? Or do you simply rate them higher? If you had previously been blown away and given out high marks, how do you go up from there?

I do for this reason, but only if I drink the beer again.

This. I'd never change a past review just because I thought, looking back, it didn't deserve the rating I gave it. However, if I revisit the beer after a while, the review's fair game for an overhaul.

I tend to just rate the new beer higher and leave the old review alone. I have looked at old reviews, but for 99% of them I feel my description was decent so I leave it alone. The only beers I've re-reviewed or adjusted numbers are beers that I didn't have a good understanding of the style and I am drinking the beer again.

I've revisited very few, more so out of circumstances that seemed to dictate that it was not the best timing originally.

However, I am more impressed how enthusiastic I am for some of my older reviews and how I still feel about those beers even now. I am just drinking a Founders Breakfast Stout and I am just as enthusiastic about it as I was when I first had it.

That is interesting for easy to find locals - it is like comparing apples to apples over time and annual renditions - but I think I struggle with the evolution of expectations.

I have had this problem. I look back on the beers I first reviewed, and, in comparison to my standards now, I have WAY over-rated some. That is okay with me. I enjoy reading what my impressions were of the beers back then. Beer reviewing is fun and doesn't benefit anyone but me. I enjoy reading my old reviews and comparing my notes to the ones I collect now. If it bothers you to have the discrepancy, re-review the beer and make an addition to the notes or delete the old and start fresh! It is totally up to you; for me, I'm keeping my totally over-rated beers

For ones I reviewed unfavorably and had a better experience the second time around, I'll change my review in fairness to the beer, the brewer, and the brewery. (lots of factors could have played a part the first time around but I was doing my best to represent the beer at the time)

If I haven't tried a beer in a while or something seems like a nose dive in quality control *cough*ZD*cough* I'll update my score.

Wouldn't change a previous review. But Im sure if I tried my first beers right now they would receive a lower score.

I've gone back and made adjustments by editing older reviews as I drink the beer again. Like the OP, I've become a bit more critical as my experience has increased.

I find myself in the same boat in terms of looking back at beers I probably rated too high awhile back. I think that's a natural occurrence of drinking more and more new beers - relative to what you've had, scores will change. If I see something is grossly out of proportion from that perspective I'll knock the score down (or bump it up) if I'm somewhat familiar with it's attributes. I never used to review beers so it makes it difficult sometimes and in cases where I just can't remember I don't tinker too much.

I apparently am the opposite of a few of you. My original reviews were low relative to my newer reviews. The I swung the other way. Now I am back to mostly negative rDev. Sometimes I have to consider when I reviewed a beer when I look at my rating when I consider a re-purchase.

    On reviews...
I definitely will adjust a review and ratings. I find it funny how often my original impressions were pretty much on point - even if I wouldn't word my thoughts exactly the same. Occasionally, for any of a variety of reasons (mostly changes to me, but could be to the beer), I see a review that is either off or incomplete from what I think now. On these, I will often add addenda, noting them as such as to when I re-reviewed the beer and the differences I found. Some beers I think I have 3 tasting notes from .

I've gone back and adjusted some of my reviews after I realized that there are better beers in the style. I have not noticed how my scores have changed over time. I've had the same experience with a particular beer in a style that blows me away and then I try a different beer in the same style and it really blows me away. So I go back and adjust the previous rating.

I have tried very hard to be consistent. I use the same gauge I started with, and fortunately am very stingy. There are some beers that I'd move up, and some I'd move down, just because my tastes have changed. When I next try the beer, I'll update. I will not go back and change just because.

If I have a beer I've had before again, then I adjust scores accordingly, if I need to... no matter if that review is from 2012 or just a month ago. I've found that, for the most part, my scores don't need to be changed much, if at all.

I don't consider other beers when I rate a beer. I rate it according to style or according to what the brewer intended to make. It is my job to make an unbiased review of the beer and it is the job of BA to sort and rank the beers accordingly. If a new beer comes out that tastes infinitely better than an older beer it doesn't mean that the older beer doesn't meet the criteria for a 5.0 beer just because there's a new kid on the block.

    I adjust as needed.

As for review development, I used to type it all as one large paragraph. Then I started writing them in a notebook and reviewing from that, but I'm lazy so often times when it came to actually typing the review up I would keep it as short as possible .

Now, I just write it up in the notepad section on my phone then copy and paste it into the review box. Saves a lot of time, as has brough my reviews from an average of about 400 characters up to 2000 or so
