I am the only beer drinker in the house so a 5 gallon batch lasts me a few months ...

I have brewed a Pliny clone several times now with a recipe that has ~5 ounces of dry hops staggered 7 + 5 days. While Pliny is intended to be consumed fresh, it's just not possible given my situation.

Since it takes me a while to finish the batch, I've been thinking about dry hopping for 7 days then the other 5 when the keg is half consumed. My thought process being that the second later dry hop will provide aroma/flavor that may perhaps have been lost as the beer aged.

The issue however, is that the second dose is intended for 5 gallons, not 2.5 or less and I am wondering if the beer will be lacking flavor and aroma by going only with the first addition in the beginning.

So if you were me ... would you follow the recipe and load-up on dry hops as the recipe intends or try something new.

Will a 5 ounce dry hop dose have significantly more flavor & aroma than 2.5 ounces?

    Your thoughts?

Here's an idea (I haven't tried because I drink my IPAs faster : ) ...but if you have an extra keg, maybe purge/dryhop one normally, but 3/4 full and then purgre/dryhop the other one 1/4 full with hops tied up in purged headspace. As first keg depletes to ~1/3 to 1/4 full, push to 2nd keg via liquid lines. Might work for your situation?

If it were me ... I'd brew a 2.5G batch.
(It is me and I do brew 2.5G batches)

You can also play around with split batches. I turned my last 13 gallon batch of APA into 5 gallons of Berliner (diverted 3 gallons pre-boil and diluted), 5 gallons of saison (diverted post-boil, pre-whirlpool), and 5 gallons of APA.

I'm currently averaging about 2 gallons per batch. You seriously might want to try that, there are tons of advantages. For my last batch, which coincidentally was IPA, I made 3 gallons of wort, but split the batch into two kettles of 1.5 gallons each with two completely different hop regimens -- none of the same hops in each. This way I am actually drinking it faster due to the variety, not getting tired of the same old beer over and over, but able to switch back and forth. (By the way, Sorachi Ace is a fantastic hop. Too bad most BJCP'ers have apparently never tasted it before -- it gets poor scores in comps even though it is fantastic. But I digress.)

I like a lot of "new" hops...except when they taste like lemon pledge/or have "dill notes" : )
Most peoples' favorite hops are directly proportional to price...good/proprietary hops are usually more expensive.
Maybe in a Saison or sparingly with some better hops, but would be sacrilege in a single-hop American IPA, IMHO : )
    Cheers

Worked for Brooklyn Brewing, and I really liked theirs, so I figured I needed to give it a shot, and succeeded with flying colors. Guess I didn't realize it was a saison; at the time I believed it was a pale ale for some reason. Mine was given a score of 25, that's too funny, it has no flaws (I'm BJCP Certified #A0511). It wasn't single hop, either, I used 3 hops -- my memory fails me as to what the others were. Oh well. More for me.

Lemon and dill is way better than orange and onion.

Or cat piss. I have 5 cats. I don't need to smell or taste cat piss, thank you very much.

So no Nelson Sauvin for you? I find that one to be the most cat pissy of the cat piss hops.

Can't say I've ever specifically tasted a Nelson beer before. Immense hatred for Simcoe and Mosaic. Citra and Columbus are alright sometimes. However a lot of it is also crop specific -- sometimes good, sometimes nasty.

My notes for that beer are-

Cat pee, cheap chardonnay, lemon, garlic, pine

    Not worthy of the hype.

    2.8/5

Apparently, the herd likes cat pee beer? I don't give a higher score just because a beer is highly rated. I will try Nelson at least once more since I can buy it locally.

I liked Duet and Exponential Hoppyness. So there's that.

Why not enter it again in a different competition with different judges? That should settle it, or create a tie to break.

Already in the works. Two more comps this coming Saturday. I always enter at least 2 if not 3. This one, 3.
