Late to the NBS party as it was a wild ride of a day, coupled with nearly three weeks on the road. This is a late cross post with WBAYD as I decided to finish the growler I cracked earlier and give this beer I ticked last year a proper review. Going to break down the final couple glasses from a growler of Comrade Brewing of Denver Superpower IPA. Let's have a taste.....

It pours a pale gold with a very generous amount of lingering white foam. It has an aroma of heavy passionfruit, pineapple, guava, and butyl. The flavor is passionfruit forward with grapefruit and guava. There is some butyl flavor in the finish along with dank weed. The feel is oily with a semi dry finish.

Overall this is one of my favorite IPA's and quite possibly the best IPA in Colorado. Comrade certainly knows how to brew them. The wet hop version is other worldly. I'm longing for the day they expand and distribute. My score was a 4.59 / rDev +6%.

Have a great week! Link to review.......

So, while in the process of doing some fridge cleaning, I discovered this gem that @woemad sent in the last round of the NBS BIF...

Can't believe I forgot this...Fremont Bourbon Barrel Aged Abominable with coffee and cinnamon.

Pours pitch black with a lighter mocha colored head. The lacing forms a nice ring around the glass and lingers...enticing.

Smell is of fresh roasted coffee, cinnamon, and baker's chocolate. Fairly straightforward, but welcoming. Booze is present in the nose but not overpowering.

Taste is bourbon forward with a kick of espresso. Nice and viscous with a slight burn on the way down. Chocolate notes support the backbone and provide a station for the cinnamon and coffee to jump out from. Very nice.

Mouthfeel has a nice viscosity to it. On the heavier side but nice for the style. The barrel definitely didn't thin this beer out.

Overall, an extremely well made barrel aged beer.

Guys, I had new beers. I took notes. I hung out with friends, ate meat, drank beer, and did not do anything to make a contribution to NBS. Sorry.

With fanfare, here comes a first-timer to NBS! Posting a little late in the game, too. And without a picture, unfortunately. I would like to post a new beer I've had, if for nothing else than to see how much attention it's gotten.

My girlfriend and I very recently (as in we got here Thursday night) moved to Colorado, very close to Denver, doing an extended stay place for a bit. Earlier today we went to a very cool little brewpub called the Bull & Bush, brewer of Colorado's "Man Beer". Best name ever. Also, a great pub. Very close by, very nice UK-esque atmosphere, good food, got to watch the Broncos come out of a tie with a win and my poor little Browns come out of one...well, you know the rest.

While I was there, I decided to be adventurous and try a beer style I'd never tried before. It caught my attention immediately.

Captain Midnight Black Saison 2010 vintage

This beer was immediately appealing to me due to its pitch-black color. I figure, anything that dark has to have that nice, roasty quality I love. Yeah, about that... I'll get back to you.

Smelled very pepper. Very, very black pepper. Some yeast snuck into the nose, but the spices overpowered it. It all kind of hid what was to come next...

Spice and funk. More spice. A layer of funky yeast, tiny sour notes. Finally, there's that malt, but it's just enough to hold it together. So odd, yet...I loved every sip.

I did a full review of it only to realize that each review seemed to be quite inconsistent of the others and mine seemed quite a ways off. I'm truly wondering what happened there. I still think it's a brew to check out if for nothing more than curiosity's sake. It was good. Quite good. Just really odd. But isn't that what exploring new brews is all about: Finding the oddities, the things you wouldn't taste anywhere else? That's why I posted. Yeah, let's go with that.

    Howdy NBS Amigos,
@smakawhat brought some fresh vibe. I think you made Maria and Dave proud.
I'm not one of the early birds, as you can see. I could've posted first because I've basically been drinking all weekend due to family being in town from New Mexico and Oregon. And, I definitely host friends and family with excellent beer.

So many good beers, but one that stood out was Melange 10, from the Bruery. (I was like a nervous father, since it was my recipe that won the blending competition that resulted in M10). Family was pretty positive in their reviews. The cinnamon comes through nicely with the Mexican chocolate, and finishes with a little heat from the ancho chile.

Hope you all are having a good Sunday.

Congrats on the first NBS post. Welcome!

Sometimes a beer is a hit and sometimes it's a miss. Everyone has a different palate. What I tend to think of for NBS is just a group of people sitting around (albeit electronically) sharing a beer. Our opinions are our own and should be treated like that.

Anyway, welcome to the NBS crew. Hope to hear from you again!

If you haven't had Café Royale from Alewerks, make room for quite possibly another favorite. It's probably my favorite VA beer, right before BA GBS. This one was fantastic but Café Royale was a notch more impressive, if you can imagine that.

I have been stockpiling this beer - picking it up wherever I run across it. Looking forward to trying more than a 4 oz sample, and this write up tells me I won't be disappointed!

Thought your review was just fine. And if pictures were absolutely necessary there are a few of us who wouldn't be posting here.

Don't worry too much about the difference between your review and those of the others. I looked at the beer. Its been in the database for about 4 years, has a total of 4 reviews including yours. There are a lot of things that could be going on there.

The useful thing for others is that your review tells us what the beer was like to you at the time you had it. As for the differences, from this distance it could be that what you had was not the identical beer to the one that was reviewed by the others. Similarly, you will find that even for yourself, what you have to to eat with the beer or even things you ate earlier in the day can have an effect on the flavors you get out of the beer.

That's one of several reasons the beer doesn't even have an overall or average score yet. The site owners feel, quite rightly so, that a certain minimum number of reviews is needed to establish some general consistency across the scores. Whether we agree that it takes at least 10 or not doesn't much matter, almost none of us are professionally trained as reviewers and so you'll often find folks with very different tastes and that there are year to year variations in beers.

    Enjoy and Welcome!

This is what is so great about these threads - learning what other people think. My reaction to this beer was just about opposite, and I dig the stuff. To me, the heat came at the end and while potent, it seemed short-lived until the end where it did build and linger. There was some fruitiness from the habaneros that I'd expect from the pepper. I felt the base beer worked well as a vehicle to carry the heat.

No sweat - we all have different tastes and everything tastes different. Your review is no less valid than anyone else's on here. Welcome!
