To me it's completely different then someone that is actively looking to complete a trade. But I would think a "thanks, but not interested" would do the trick and take about 10 seconds.

As someone who values communication very highly AND have reached out in such a manner and gotten quite a few trades done (right, @F2brewers?), I DO NOT expect a response from "cold calls" and don't think it's rude at all for the person to ignore my message. That said, you'd be amazed at what kind of long-term friendship and trading partners you can establish by responding, even if you're not interested.

Back when there was wants/gots matching many trades were done this way... It was much easier than posting some random ISO and only hoping for a response.

Now, I believe people think it is some sort of faux pas. Personally, I don't mind if people contact me regarding my gots or my wants... In fact, I wish MORE people would contact me about my wants... I probably would be more apt to keeping them current.

Also, I've made many friends and long term trade partners this way.

I don't know about this. For example, in the post I just put up (http://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/iso-bbbm-maybe-other-jackie-os-stouts-ft-list.342153/), I listed a ton of beers. My only reason for doing that is that I'm looking for a beer very few people around here (Chicago) are going to have, and I'm trying to do it IP if possible. So, I just want to list everything I have right now that I'd trade for BBBM to give the greatest probability of getting a bite.

I'm not saying your wrong. But, I just know that in my case, I'll 100% close with the first person that wants anything on my list (unless they're aggressively trying to "win," or something else weird is going on.) I'm sure people have intentions, though. And, maybe my intentions would be considered auctioning. I don't really know.

I liked mine the other day, I replied saying I'll take you up on your offer, and he responded with, oh, I listed the number of beer "x" I was looking for on my trade post, I could throw in another (shit local) to make up for it though. I blocked and DNT listed that effer so fast, but just laughed about it.

This kinda drives me nuts. Was talking to a guy about a large international trade and dug out all my Rare Barrel from the cellar to type up a complete list of whats available and then... silence. It was a bit of work on my end so a simple "ive decided to go another way" would've been polite.

I've gone a bit relaxed and taken a few days to respond to people but always apologize. Bottom line... as they taught me in college... "Every offer you have three options: acceptance, rejection, or counter offer. Never, EVER let silence speak for you"

feeling old but it seems a young kid issue where they dont understand what their word means. If you start a conversation just follow through, is that too much to ask?
and yes please please give us a way to mark a trade as closed.

@Todd can we provide some option?

Sooooo many BMs from users asking about this.

We can set a limit on editing/deleting (they share the same permission) posts or not. It was unlimited, but people abused it to get around the 72 hour repost rule so we set it to 30 mins (default). Now people are abusing it by posting "similar" posts and end up whining all-day long when they get busted for it. We can't win and some people simply suck.

So ... the only way users can mark their offer as closed (whatever method that may be) beyond the 30 min default is if we set editing/deleting back to unlimited. I have no problem going back to unlimited, however, those who use the delete thread option to close and then repost to essentially bump their offers should get stomped on with warnings, account restrictions and bans if they keep it up. And then ignored so we don't waste our time going back and forth with them and their pleas to gain access to their Inbox so they can finish their trades.

This approach penalizes the few vs. the whole, which I'm guessing most people will get behind.

I'm guessing that, based on this post, it isn't an option to allow editing (or even just editing the title) as an option while still disallowing the delete thread function?

If a thread could be edited but not deleted, then reposting would be easier to catch (and possibly require less moderation?).

Correct. As stated, they share the same permissions.

is the comment box for reporting a post searchable (backend).
Could we just 'report' our own post and as a reason put the one word closed and a backend search which goes in and closes posts on a timed schedule? No idea if this is possible but I am presuming this is just a large db which can have automated actions.

I typically reply back after 8 hours or so with a link to this thread. Surprisingly, I usually get a snarky reply back but i'm hoping they at least read the thread.

I don't see the need for so much legislation. If a Ft is out of line forget it. If your ISO is met with ridiculous requests, forget it, and a no thanks will suffice. If you've traded a bit you know right from wrong, and shut it down. If they're new traders they'll get the hint when it's shot down. Like some things there's is leeway, someone looking to trade KBBS certainly isn't looking for a $4$ trade, nor should he. As long as it's not an obvious auction I'd let it be, it's a lot of work that will self police itself. But that's me.

Had this happen today... A guy posts an ISO, I respond to it with exactly what he wanted ( 2 bottles from the below list) , no response, then a day or two later I see a new post from him with the same FT but now he's going for "bigger " bottles from the same brewery he was ISO at a lower ratio than the original post. Probably got a bunch of offers and figured he could get more. Which is somewhat reasonable but at least respond to my original message. I called him out on it just now so we'll see.
