This thread is really to ask your personal thoughts on muling, my story is below....

(no it isn't about muling in the trading sense that is against site rules)

I've long had the stance that bottle limits are generally good for limited releases, while you the retailer anger some customers you at least get to spread the wealth a little more than you normally would by letting a free for all happen.

I broke my rule yesterday. A local store got six bottles of Cantillon in (its been two years since my area last saw Cantillon), as soon as I got the tip via text I sent the wife on a gopickitupformebro mission, she grabbed her one bottle allotment and brought it home. When I got out of work I swung back by and bought a second bottle (apparently word had not gotten out yet).

I actually felt bad about it. But was this even muling? It's not like I was standing in line with my wife, aunt, uncle, sister in law waiting to crush my allotment.

    I think that's fine.

What annoys me is when there is a release and I hear things like "I can trade as many as you like, I have 10 extended relatives in the area and they all have the day off!" .. which I heard a few days ago re T-25.

You should return your bottle to the store and say you're sorry.

    EDIT:

Seriously though, in your case it's not a huge deal. The problem is when someone rolls in with a bus full of mules.

Nothing wrong with it. It's your life, your money, and your inclination.

Send me the bottle post-haste to rid yourself of the overwhelming guilt I know you are feeling.

    "I broke my rule yesterday."

Then it wasn't your actual rule, it was just something that you wanted to believe in but had never been put to the test on.

My opinion is that you took more than you fair share. It's not a crime and I don't judge you for it, but you manipulated the sytem to get multiple bottles and that's whack.

Three cheers for your wife. I don't have any problem with what you did it.

Drink it up with a clear conscience

How? It doesn't say "1 bottle per household" or "1 bottle but only if YOU consume it" or "1 bottle per person and you can't give it to anyone" . It says "1 bottle per person."

I have stuck to bottle limits before when I didn't want to. This was really the first exception. The Loons make people do crazy things.

    But it's still whack.

    That dude was clearly joking.

Also, people who get their panties in a bunch about this amuse me. If there are no bottle limits then no one has any obligation to anyone else to leave things behind. If you're putting on disguises to get past a limit then fine, you're a douchebag. Paying hobos is pretty sleazy too. But if you bring your wife to an event to get the second allotment? Whatever, that's fine.

I would be worried about paying a hobo - he may run in and come out with some Old E instead.

You're talking about Cantillon, so frankly I would have no problem if you said you bought all six. As for muling, I support it simply because I have benefitted from a friend (mule) picking up a bottle for me at various special releases. However, I also support breweries who clearly state the bottle limit when they announce the release date. Regardless of the release size, I like "4": one for now, one for the cellar, two for friends or trade partners.

If I want something, the availability is there, and I can afford it - I buy until one of those 3 goes away. Feel better?

Bingo. People whine a lot about "entitlement" on this site, and I understand it, but frankly the only 6 people entitled to a bottle from that case of Cantillon were the first 6 to show up and pay the money for them. If all 6 happen to be one beer nerd and 5 of his friends, so be it. No one else is entitled to those bottles just because they would love to drink them and some of the people who bought them might not feel the same way.

What's genuinely lame is line cutting or going through a line twice - but putting on a hat the second time so that no one will recognize your greedy covert ass.

If people really have a problem with first-come-first-served, then perhaps someone should try distributing a limited beer based on an essay contest or something to prove one's worthiness. Until then, whining about mules is just evidence of a misguided sense of entitlement.
