I'll get flamed for this, but I am very tired of the Hop War. Some craft brewers now list IBUs on the label. In one way this helps those of us looking for flavor rather than kickass make a decision. But it also is a way of bragging. I live in one of the craft-brew capitals of the U.S. and this marketing aspect has taken a firm grip on a couple top brewers here. Flavor and style has given way to overpowering bitterness. Too bad.

I've never had a problem with information being listed on the bottle. If it doesn't taste good I could care less how many IBU's a beer has.

    I haven't looked at anyone's IBU's for years.

I also think the direction brewers are going now is flavor without bitterness.

The curious thing is that IBUs are supposedly rather meaningless, as the bitterness they measure can be percieved differently depending on the composition of the beer as a whole. I almost wish they made a 'tasting kit' for this, like they have for imperfections.

I used to look at the IBU's when I was first exploring to AVOID the extreme bitterness. As my palate adjusted and I started liking more styles and varients, I stopped checking the label.

Where can I get one of these tasting kits for imperfections?

The cure to your resistance is Mikkeller 1,000 IBU.

    The more information the better.

I only wish brewers did the same boasting for freshness and started putting bottled-on dates on all beers! That would be a war I would thoroughly enjoy -- a freshness war!

Why do you feel you can't tell us which "craft-brew capital" you live in?

To be honest, these types of posts have been happening for years. At my brewery, we actually tell everyone that we are trying our best to decrease bitterness while increasing hop flavor and aroma in all of our hoppy beers. Our Hopbursted IPA for example uses 4 lbs of hops per barrel and hop oils to help augment the aroma. However, the IBU's measure in around 60 because all the hops are added at the end of the boil and in the dry hop. No bittering additions are done on our IPA, DIPA, Triple IPA, or IPL.

I've always thought IBU listings were pointless since the actual bitterness of the beer is largely dependent on the malt bill, abv, hop varieties, and other factors.

I pretty much only drink IPAs and couldn't care less, nor do I look at, about IBUs.

I see IBU wars, or any one-upmanship, as base level marketing. Generally a harmless annoyance that, which once recognized, can be dismissed, thus allowing one to focus on one's own values.

Enamel pealing bitterness does appeal to some, and it is true that other variables do impact one's perception. However, ibu level is an indicator of bitterness none the less.

So, no, I do not allow this to bother me.

I always find it curious when someone creates a thread and then never checks it again. Even more curious when that thread seems to be directed at causing controversy.

Lots of people post to a thread, then move on. It is no big deal. Maybe this is some form of gorilla market research. The topic seems to be non controversial after all anyway.

Putting ibu's on bottles has been a regular practice for at least 4 or 5 years in my parts (which you can find by looking at unlike your profile which doesn't list your beer capital). Also, is this your first post? Agenda, bro?

Not to be a dick if you are a well meaning new beer advocate, but I smell troll as well.

It's a marketing war, there's a ton of IPAs on the shelf and they range from poorly executed to stellar. There's already for those pretty labels, and super cool gnarley labels, they want you to pull the trigger and buy. Whether you buy twice is their individual challenge though. Cool labels won't make you buy more than once, so they have to be good too.
