That is a great one! Had their Oktoberfest at the brewery last week and it was better than I thought it would be. I should give them more credit, most of the beer they make is really good.

Perfect fall day in Northern Virginia. Getting ready to watch Michigan beat up on Northwestern (hopefully...).

Up since 4am to run my half marathon at 7am! It has been a long day already. Race went very well except for a severe shortage of port a potties at the start. That was not cool. Dreaming of this beer since mile 11. Going to enjoy it. Cheers!

Splitting this with @CommanderOfAwesome after a hard fought 40 miles and 4000' of climbing in the Berkeley hills.
    Well deserved I'd say!

Greetings all! We are having a perfect autumn afternoon, so I figured it would be the perfect time for an Oktoberfest tasting. These are some 'in between' versions, not as pale or as dark as many others of the style; kind of a 'meet me in the middle' thing going for them. Here are our participants:
and after they have been randomized a bit:

My preliminary tasting notes are as follows:
    1) Palest of the bunch. Doughy malt dominates, but grassy hops make a strong impression as well, with some dark bread underneath it all. Rich, smooth mouthfeel, tasting of bready malt, and finishing with a touch of sweetness and a snap of bitterness. They come across as separate entities, and could come together a bit more.

    2) Malty and clean nose, fairly strong. Malt character is toasty and bready, with just the slightest hint of dried flowers underneath. Smooth, malty palate, finishes with a toasty dryness. Bitterness is just as present as it needs to be, and not an iota more. Stellar!

    3) Darkest of the 4, with some dark caramel in the weak aroma; some pumpernickel as well. Malty palate with a very toasty and dry finish. Dark caramel pulls up the rear as it lingers. Sort of flabby, and could use a hair more bitterness to take it to the next level, but still enjoyable and drinkable.

    4) Aroma of creamy, bready maly with hay and dried flowers from noticeable hops (although not as present as #1). Light toast resides underneath. Palate shifts to full-on toasty malt, with a dry lingering finish. Hops start to come through mid-glass. Strongest malt flavor of the 4. Fantastic!

I'll be back with my #1 choice and who's who. Until then, enjoy some Soul Music Saturday with me. Title track of one of my faves:

What a beautiful fall day! I almost enjoyed the yardwork; it was so nice to be outdoors.
My wife and I had lunch at Loco Coco's. The pumpkin martini is hers, I had Tributary Imperial IPA.

Back home, took the three dogs for a walk. I'm getting ready to make the vegan sausage for pasta with sausage and peppers, and drinking Narwhal. What a great beer!

Had my son's cross country meet in Williamsburg today, and happened to wind my way by the Alewerks Brewery on the way home.

But, more about that for NBS!

For today I am enjoying a rare Cigar City delivery to VA

And some appropriate cross country music

Toddler napping so some Dad time this afternoon. Happy to have had a chance to try Unsessionable - saw it last year, didn't pick it up, then saw the stellar reviews too late. I think it may have been in pints last year, 12 oz is a better format. Pretty good - but if you are in Chicago, drive up the road a little to WI and get some NG Scream IIPA or look around for some Pipeworks Ninja v. Unicorn (now in pint cans) -- either is a better beer IMHO.
