Would you say that it was similar to a Miller Lite (for example), or far worse?

Has some nice flavors of banana, cloves and caramel, almost like a loaf of banana nut bread. Medium Mouthfeel and Medium carbonation. Overall nice version of the style - 4/5.

    Cheers......

    -------------------------------------------------

Poured from the bottle into a Libbey style pilsner glass, the heck with the mug today… Twist off bottle, indecipherable dating code.

Deep copper red and chestnut to mahogany brown body color. Great hints of orange on the sides as well. Creamy classic two finger head, tan light in color with a good even pinhead bubble in the makeup. Settles to a simple one finger puck and good collar nicely. Great view of real creeping slow carbonation as well.

Excellent aroma, deep caramel with lots of toasty character. Delicicious and spicy clove and nutmeg like spices giving off on the nose as well. Slightly dry and with excellent crispy toasty crust like qualities. Excellent so far.

Toast quality comes with a few more surprises on the palate but with a lighter angle. Deep and cracker caramel sensing malt, some noticeable banana like sweetness on first sip also. Chewy body a bit, with excellent toffee aromas and soft sweetness of caramel for the finish. Minimal hop herbality and an excellent thick but also drying aftertaste, nearly bone dry.

    A really solid basic marzen.

I'ts been forever since I had a Miller Lite (when I go Miller, it's Highlife) but I don't think that would have the weird, nasty, solvent-y thing this had. I suppose it could have been old, since there was no date, but god, it was awful, and I've got a wee heavy from the same brewery for later today. I'm honestly worried...

    really, a brilliant beer.[IMG]

dry, almost like a great rose wine. a lot of cherry tartness and fruit on the tongue.
for me, a super beer, I will be going to the bottle shop for another before I leave

    New IPA Sunday...

    Troegs Hop Knife

My local bottle shop offered pre-made mix-six-packs of IPA cans, and couldn't resist grabbing one. Drank the Union Jack and Jai Alai last night. Saving the new ones for today.

Starting with one with great can art from one of my favorite local breweries...

Hop Knife pours a clear orange-tinted gold with a finger of bright white head.

There's a strong fresh, wet hop aroma with citrus behind.

The fresh-cut hops continue into the taste, which is surprisingly malty and dry. There's a touch of hops bitterness on the backend. The mouthfeel is crisp and carbonated -- drier than many pilsners.

Maybe this dryness is where the "knife" part comes in, cutting everything away after that first hop aroma and flavor. Hate to say it, but it's not working for me. At least I've got a few new ones to try.

Time for some Eagles football. Hope they can turn it around. Picked these up on a recent trip to VT. Nice little Dunkel.

I love that you have this beer. I went to vermont to chase heady topper and I did and I don't regret it. BUT what I found was this brewer. Von Trapp. Where are they? Who are they? Far away? Hows the beer? "effin' good is what their beer is." So, to see them in bottles is titalitating to me . I will keep an eye out for them on the shelves. How was this beer anyway? Is the surprisingly crisp finish full of hops flavor? The only dunkel most of us have had is warsteiners and it's made with hop extract. How about this one? Fresh hops?

Yeah Von Trapp bottles now... there were too many places to go last I visited and I did pass them up last time, but I wouldn't recommend that on anyone especially if you haven't been there.

I would say yes. Not a ton of hops. Fairly well balanced slightly on the malt side. That could be the darker malts hiding a bit of the hops. I enjoyed this quite a bit. I also had their Vienna which was awesome. I wish I had drank a few of them in VT as I would have brought more of them home. I was to busy buying flights to drink them when we got back to the condo. They seem to be all over northern vermont but not as much in southern vt.

Cheers to an absolutely spectacular fall day. It has not been this warm (75) on this date since my wife and I were married 7 years ago.

A quick review of Snorkel as I am going to spend the majority of my day outside basking in the warm sun.

Transparent pale yellow with a 1 finger white head. Minor spotty lacing. Light citrus aromas with some lemon zest and a tangy wheaty funk. Tart and lemony with the salty mushroom flavor filling in along with some funk. Easy to drink with a tingly carbonation and drying finish. This was enjoyable for this very warm fall day.

Cheers and I may return later this evening.

Well, Good Morning NBS. Thanks for the gracious and glowing start Maria.
Parent conferences are almost done for me, (except for a few flakes who I must accomadate this coming week:angry:). But at least the mercury should be south of a hundred now.
A late night last night brought me into NBS in the wee hours. But it helped me justify popping my:
Imperial Stout X: Aztec Chocolate by Boulevard. Thanks to @gtted for this gem.

Well the pour brings true temptation. A rich, nearly black liquid lifts a khaki-to-oatmeal colored froth that rises north of a finger and settles to a ring of loosely linked bubbles. Smells of chocolate, the true chocolate, rich & roasted with bitter notes. Also, hints of cinnamon are next in the line. Can't wait to taste. What the smell hints at is merely a preview. This one is quite delicious. The dark cocoa comes through with that lush dark, baker's chocolate. But, there is so much more. The cinnamon comes through in one of the most perfectl examples, to me, of the spice being both omipresent yet not overwhelming. It's truly imbued in the very essence of the beer, but doesn't lunge to be in the spotlight. Then, there is chile. For those who wish a strong, hot chile presence, this is not your stout. For me, it comes through in the back of the mouth, slowly becoming more pronounced with the swallow. Could is have more? Yes, but I really like how it runs anchor, and brings this one home. Mouthfeel is fine. I tend to prefer a bit more heft but not thin by any stretch.
Overall, a truly beautiful, elegant Impy Stout.

So, for once a few of us on the left coast are participating earlier. I'm looking at you @kemoarps & @woemad .

    WEST COAST! :stuck_out_tongue:

I hated parent conferences. It always felt like some some kind of strange third party interview. BTW that chile sounds perfect. That's how it should be. imho Not the dominant flavor and creeping along the back.

    Cheers @2beerdogs

Back with my first beer since NBS kicked off, a wee heavy from the same NE Washington brewery that spawned The Grouch:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16334/79782/?ba=woemad

Unlike The Grouch, it's drinkable, but it's still a bit of a mess. Like an accidental Oud Bruin or Flanders Red as much as a wee heavy. This completes my foray into Northern Ales for the day and, perhaps, forever.
