I hate the 2pm releases they do. Why not 11 or 12?

Agreed. I heard there's going to be a lot more this time though, so hopefully you won't need to line up early to get some.

I have always been baffled as to why HW does not open, in general, until 2pm on Saturdays.

Last year's was one of the best, if not the best, stouts I've ever had. Was lucky enough to trade for a couple right away before it gained its hard to get status. Will probably try again this year since I can't make it up there.

last years Trickery was the last time you could show up 15mins before a HWP release and still be in the first 20 people. every release since meant you had to be there about 2 hours prior to be anywhere near the front... sigh.
still kicking myself for not going back through the line a 2nd time then.

I think I'm going to go to this release, but I'm not lining up super early. I might get there by 1 at the earliest.

I've caught on to a lot of the releases here in VA that if you want to go early to line up just to meet people and chat it up for the experience that's fine but many of them, even on limited bottle counts, you could stroll up an hour or so after, miss all the line and get right in for your bottles. I didn't go to the Ruse release but I think I read there were still bottles at 3pm and the line was nearly non-existent at that point. The only benefit was people who got there early would able to go through a 2nd time. Resolute Day last year was the same way. If you want just regular Resolute that was still available nearly a week later at the brewery. Variants were another story. The recent releases at Lickinghole Creek with with 500 bottle limits have not been an issue either mainly due to where they are located. Show up a couple hours after they open and you can still grab bottles. The issue last weekend was The Source sold out in under an hour but that was because it went to distro and they held back a smaller count not knowing how fast it would sell through. Overall, breweries are coming around to how to better manage their bigger releases and that's a great thing to see.

at the risk of being snarky that is probably due to Lickinghole not making any beer that is worthy of driving out to BFE and waiting in a line for...
I'm not the biggest HWP fan in general but the 'Megastout' variants (Trickery/Foolery/Ruse) are absolutely delicious and worth standing in a line for (within reason of course)

Fuck it, I'll bite. If Hardywood has 3 beers worth lining up for, LCCB has at least that. I would drive out and wait in line for Despot, Illuminatos, Supreme Leader, and Heir Apparent. Honorable mention to Coconut Delight. The only Hardywood megastout I've has is Ruse, and I think all the LCCB beers I just named are better. In the end though, if most people agree with you and not me, your point stands.

Except for Despot Day right? I didn't go but did see those insane pictures. People came out of their holes after quite a heavy storm if memory serves me right. I think LCCB is starting to take a page out of the HWP book. It seems like every weekend as of late they are having a bottle release... I personally think a lot of their beers are quite good. Maybe not getting as much chatter as others due to their proximity to nothing and the majority not wanting to make the trip.

I may be incorrect but only Coconut Delight out of your list was brewery only, the rest saw distribution. whichever one was the Huna/MexCake/Abraxas like spiced stout was actually pretty decent (can't remember the name though...)

If anyone ends up with a Trickery FT and would be interested in something from the next Fonta Flora release, hit me up.

Despot was also brewery only. Heir Apparent was the spiced stout, and Supreme Leader was the barrel aged version. Both of those saw distribution, but I would bet Supreme Leader sells out at the brewery the next time its released.

It doesn't really matter though, I'm just saying that those beers are good enough that I would line up for them if I had too.

Hmm depending on limits, I might have to try to hit this, but Old Hickory is doing a double release on the same day. Ugh!

This may be the first time I actually go to a release, as the stars may align perfectly with no games, kids with friends, etc., Being said, any advice on the parking? I figure since they have the new building with a decent parking lot that we may not have to line up down Boulevard but they also seem to take up lots of parking with picnic tables and rope off a crap ton of area. Maybe that will be a decent reason to get there around 1:00 are earlier perhaps.... Weather will be great, maybe a touch chilly for some, but otherwise sunny. That fact alone may draw folks out.

It's been a while since I was down to HW for a release but I am pretty sure they will have the parking lot of both buildings blocked off. That's been for guests to move around and food trucks to park. Someone correct me if I am wrong. You would likely have to park on the side of the road leading to the brewery or that parking lot across the street that has several spaces. For anyone coming from out of town there are a few other bottle releases going on in and around RVA on Halloween that you could also check out for a worth while haul. List of the ones I know about below.
    * Isley - Boozy Mother (bourbon barrel aged Choosy Mother) doors open at NOON
    * LCCB - Virginia Black Bear (NOON)
    * Center of the Universe - El Duderino (1PM)

Releases the week before (may be able to find these in distro)
    * LCCB - Bourbon Barrel & Ginger Tripel
    * AleWerks - Barrel Aged Pumpkin Ale (brewery only)
    * Hardywood - Quadrahop Fourth Anniversary Ale
