...To bring home a couple of growlers of their signature beers. I'll be traveling back and forth from the Bronx. I'll be using the trains. I am looking for beers that are extraordinary, and that are not readily available. IPA's. DIPA's, SBPA's, and stouts. Those of you who enjoy these styles, and have privy to the area.... what would you recommend. I don't travel to Manhattan often, but I'll be there next week on biz...Thanks!!
A Manhattan brewery with extraordinary but not readily available beers for growler fills? Holy cow! You've outdone yourself with this request @Beertsipper . Does it need to be within one block of a subway too?
is this a brain puzzler? are there any "real" breweries in Manhattan at all? maybe you mean you want to go to a beer store (in Manhattan) and get growlers to take home?
Hrm the only "brewery" in Manhattan would be La Birreria, but they don't sell growlers. You're better off going to a bottle shop that sells growlers.
funny thing, Manhattan used to house the most breweries in the entire US (112), pre prohibition. but if i lived in the BX I would be checking out Gun Hill for growler fills. they make some pretty good ales. although you could trek to Whole Foods, Cooper's or Fool's Gold with your empty growlers to get some of the world class suds that Brooklyn and Queens has been producing as of late.
Of course, this isn't going to have much in the way of the requested "IPA's, DIPA's, SBPA's, and stouts," but good call regardless. Have you been lately? I remember people were claiming that the beer tasted a bit off when they first opened but before they remodeled. Maybe things have been dialed in since then. I'm curious to know.
Hi @Beertsipper, While we don't have a facility (yet) in Manhattan, we identify as a Manhattan-based brewery (we live and office in the borough) and if you're willing to give a gypsy a chance (we currently brew in Rhode Island), and you're into hoppy beers we don't think you'll be disappointed by one of our flagships, Bodega. While technically an APA at 5.6%, it's abundantly hopped with Citra and should satisfy the lupulin lust of most hopheads. At the present moment you can find Bodega at these establishments, two of which are in Manhattan and fill growlers: One Mile House and Beer Culture. Even if you don't want a growler fill, you should still check out those spots anyway as they have great tap lists. We'd also recommend tracking down our limited Skyland IPA, brewed with Dr. Rudi, Vic Secret and Wakatu hops, but most of NYC's kegs have kicked at this point. If you're willing to trek out to Brooklyn, Hops & Hocks has Skyland available for growler fills. Cheers!
