    NBS ~ Wife Training 101 & 08.08.08

Despite being expensive and VERY difficult to teach, the Wife Training & Obedience 101 Classes
    have definitely paid off!!!

    (Hehehehaha, yeah...just kidding.)

Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Series!

I probably had this 7 years ago. Today I have no idea what it tasted like back then, so in honor of my wife's successful training and her correct decision yesterday to text me and ask if I wanted one, I will partake of this encore release from the Stone Vertical Epic series.

    (Heh heh, juuust kidding again!)

Poured into my magical LaChouffe tulip because Stone classifies 08.08.08 as a Belgian style IPA.

I've had a true Belgian IPA in my LaChouffe tulip many times. I must say I'm not getting much Belgian IPA from this... BUT!!! I am tasting a little nip of hops and a really nice, spicy, yeasty, funk, crisp, fruity, sweet, slightly malty, and yes, I'll say it, bready and a tinge of the requisite cat piss, this leans towards a Belgian Tripel!

It's worthy of this "encore" especially since I don't recall the main performance!!!

No, I'm not sharing this NBS post with my wife, especially since I need to tell her later that
Advanced Wife Training & Obedience 202 Class starts tomorrow.

    : )

Sometimes I don't find any beers or styles that I want to dabble in but this fit both criteria
    [IMG]

Pours a deep, dark golden/brown hue.
Nice crisp, tart puckering mouthfeel. Same style so no shocker that it reminds me or Oude Tart, which I love.
Great flavor, great feel and just a great beer.
I really enjoy the fact that NBS challenges me to think outside of my comfort zone and try beers that usually don't find their way in to my glass.
This is one that I'll seek and maybe find its way into my cellar.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Canned on 10/9/14 poured in a duvel glass

L: Pours absolutely pitch black with a finger and a half of a burnt brown/tan head.

S: Burnt malts, toffee, bitter chocolate..some coffee maybe some burnt wood.

T: I get bitterness at first relaxing with chocolaty warmth some burnt/roasted character at the end..

F: Thick and viscous...like everyone says, motor oil big time! Usually not a trait I enjoy but with this beer it just works like I said so balanced...

O: Being that I'm not a stout guy in surprised to say I really enjoyed this ..so balanced may start to push me to the dark side.

Will have to try fresh to compare and see if I enjoy it as much as I did with a year in it!

What's up NBS players? Nice little Sunday here on the island. A bit wet but otherwise a pretty pleasant fall day. Leaves are turning yellow, red, and brown. One god damn week away from Halloween and November.
Haven't done much at all today except watch football. Tough day for the Jets but a pretty good effort if that can be said.

My new beer today is Hop Blonde Ale, from Montauk brewery here on long island. Contract brewed and canned in MA but at least its long island in tasting room location, marketing, and spirit right? A new release with a bb date of 2/22/16.

True to its name it pours a nice gold/straw grain yellow color. Major clarity, lots of carbonation, and a steady and lingering head. The nose is pretty meager and I get the faint tones of pale malt.

A clean start with the tones of pale malt coming over from the nose. Other tones of grass, bread, come on the more I drink it. A smooth finish with a sweet taste of lemon. Pretty clean and easy drinking as to be expected from the 5.% but I'm not getting any hop notes at all. Mouth feel is mostly moderate with major bready tones.

Overall, a pretty average blonde ale with a bit of a misleading title. Perhaps my palate is just too destroyed from killer hop brews? I doubt it but I think it should just be called a blonde ale. Not great, but nothing horrible either. A definite summer session for sure. I'm in the low 3's, on most of the categories with a generous 3.5 on taste.

    New American DIPA Sunday!

Greetings from a mild and overcast Jersey Shore. Some morning light rain ended by 10am. The sun peeked out early this afternoon for a moment or two, but it's a grey day. The rain ended in time for golf. Ya know, I take a month off from that silly game, then go out today and kill it. There's no way to figure.
Well, I'm here for the beer: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/119/99838/?ba=NiceTaps

well I,m 53, but still learning about new beers to me, so here goes something new to me

pours a melted carmel colorwith teeny tiny head 4/5

scents of candy and fruit, maybe cherry and or pear, but this is slight 4/5

initial taste is sour, but I will keep in mind it is barrel aged with wine notes
I have let some sit for a while to warm and now I get some roasted malt.
but I am miffed, because this is most certainly sour, I only got a ghost like presence of sweetness
    4/5

maybe some of you more experienced poobahs out there can straighten me out on why this is not a sour wild ale instesd of a brown. but it was very good, just looking for a bit of that bitter sweetness.

rough on the tongue, with a tad sweet, but then a sour finish! 4/5 for a barrel aged brown I think?

Greetings, NBSers, it's been a while since I've had something to post here. It's a gorgeous fall day here, the leaves are probably at their peak (we don't get much of a fall in these parts!) Was visiting in Knoxville recently and took a day trip to Asheville. I hadn't been there in at 15 years, and it's changed dramatically. Really enjoyed just walking around downtown and popping into the many galleries. Of course, got the chance to visit Wicked Weed. I'm a newly minted fan of Freak of Nature and Pernicious (thanks to @goingbrokeonbeer !), not that familiar with their sours, so I bought at least one of each of what they had in the bottle shop.
    Trying this one today.

It is definitely something that defies any easy categorization!

There is A LOT going on in this beer, so I'll do my best to describe it! Poured into a Wicked Weed tuplip, a quarter inch tan head appeared with a vigorous pour and disappeared almost immediately. It is very dark brown and completely opaque. The aroma is dominated by the sour/lactic funk, but I do get a little whiff of vanilla and coffee at the end. The taste is where a whole lot of things seem to happen at once: I definitely get that tang of the sour up front (that does seem nicely tempered by the barrel), that is immediately followed by a clear, sweet shot of vanilla and more of a chocolately coffee flavor than a bitter coffee. The first sip was a bit off putting, wasn't sure what to expect. As I drink it though, and as it warms a bit in the glass, I have to say that overall it is a lovely beer. The the sour and sweet play with each other rather than against one another. These flavors together could have gone horribly wrong, but they don't. My only criticism is the same one I'd have for the other WW sours I've tried, it is rather thin and restrained, seems like it could just do with a little bit more of everything--it's almost like a photocopy made when the toner is low. But bravo to Wicked Weed, this is certainly a unique and thoughtful brew. Happy, hoppy Sunday all!

    Nicely done, welcome to NBS!

I've found citrus-y black ales - specifically the predominant black IPAs work for me quite well; originally I was iffy on the style as well.

    TenFidy always tastes good, IMHO.

Yes, I am 99% certain "Flemish" Browns are sours, akin to Oud Bruins.

    4.15/5 rDev -0.7% | Avg: 4.18
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

L-Almost black with very little light transference through the glass. An aggressive pour leads to a 1 inch fluffy white head recedes to a creamy white film and good lacing.
S-Lots of malt and dark fruits.
T-Much like the smell taste is some smoky malts, alcohol, and hints of dark fruit.
F-Carbonation is light and the mouthfeel is on the higher side of medium.
O-Another good wee heavy. Alcohol presence is still pretty strong and that makes it more of a sipper for me.

Not as good as Backwoods Bastard or Old Chub for me, but it's still pretty good.

New English IPA Sunday (week 557)

Greetings again, finished beating my drum heads, and now need a beer before heading off to play.

Thanks to @cosmo4u for this delicious English IPA. Nice beer, nothing special, just the usual solid and flawless offering you expect from Southampton. Definitely hitting the spot. Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

Gonna dry those habaneros still on plant. Once dry they are great to add to just about anything. Sweet peppers are bound for the oven to be roasted with garlic.

Back for another that I picked up on my recent southwest trip. The Grand Canyon Brewing Company Pumpkin Springs Porter. A waxed bomber with no bottle date or abv. listed, poured into a twelve ounce tulip.

Pours a dark brown, almost black with a small finger of mocha head. The aroma is a medicinal spice with some pumpkin flesh. It has a spicy pepper flavor with a medicinal bitter finish. The feel is spicy and bitter.

Overall a pretty artificial tasting take on the style. I bought this as more of a joke as it was packaged in a waxed bomber for $6.60. The cheapest waxed bomber I ever bought, and the jokes on me. Oh well, nothing ventured......

    My score was a 3.2 / rDev - 17.2%. Have a great week, here's my full review........
