Nathan Yau at flowingdata put together a map showing the shortest route to take to visit the 70 "top breweries" in the U.S. Looks like it's 12,299 miles across 40 states (stopping in 28 of them). He estimates nearly 200 hours of driving would be involved. Here's a link to the full article for a write up with more details. I'm sure there's a lot to quibble with here (why isn't ____ included? So-and-so isn't open to the public, etc.), but it's still a pretty neat project. Now, who's up for a little adventure?

That's sweet except he missed New Glarus. I know everyone will think I'm just being a homer but I defy anyone who's been there to tell me it wasn't one of the coolest brewery's they've ever seen. Seriously taking a nationwide brewery tour that takes you through WI and doesn't stop at NG is a crime against beer.

Stillwater is a gypsy brewer thus does not have its own brewery. They should remove that and include Union Craft Brewing in the map.

Not only are some of these not open to the public, as already stated, some don't even have their own brewery. It would be cool for someone to put together a version of this with the top 70 visit-able breweries.

Man, if you're at Wicked Weed you might as well hit the other 7-8 breweries literally within walking distance. I'd say now instead of hitting Sweetwater, go to Athens and hit Creature Comforts and Terrapin.

No NEBCO? hmmm, who made this list? lol

also, if some of these breweries are not visitable by the public and they are still on here, why did Lawson's not make the cut? isnt every single one of their beers World Class?

So I have a problem with a map that shows you driving right by Hardywood and not stopping, but taking time for Against the Grain. I also echo the thoughts of @DerekCarruth with regard to Wicked Weed but somehow avoid the rest of Asheville.

Well the line is really thick by Wicked Weed, which means there are other breweries near by. And they're all right on top of each other in Asheville.

Jesus. Does anyone bother to actually read the article? He clearly states why he included a couple that aren't actually open to the public. He also mentions that the thicker blobs on the map represent areas that have other breweries within a 5-10 mile radius of the listed location, with the obvious implication that you could stop at other places in those areas.

edit: Also, if your local brewery isn't on the list it's because RB has a different set of stupidly over-hyped breweries than BA. For every Alesmith and Arizona Wilderness on their map there's most likely a corresponding Midwest or NE brewery that would appear on a map compiled from BA listings.

Even with all the quibbling ( I would certainly have some) it would be a great road trip if you have the stamina.

This is all true. Clearly his intent was to take you around the US to hit the best areas to go to lots of breweries as well as destination brewery's. Making the most of a trip like this important.

I'm trying to plan a summer long trip like this to do in a year or two currently but one that also takes me to disc golf courses around the country.

At least in the case of the brewery I mentioned, New Glarus, this route skips that area of the state entirely takes you through Milwaukee from Chicago then straight up to Amherst, Stevens point, plover area in north central Wisconsin. You skip the capital of our state with one of the largest craft breweries in our nation to go to a pole barn with a bunch of solar panels outside in Amherst Wisconsin which has a highway and some hotels lol.

Now don't get me wrong I love central waters and its beer and the brewery which I go to every year for the anniversary party but if I'm on a nation wide brewery tour why would I drive straight from Chicago to Central waters then back out of the state when I could drive to Madison and new glarus then head straight north to CW from the capital? You could easily do both in fact I'd say if you are heading west anyways it's a superior
    Route.

What I'm trying to establish is something that I learned early on trying to figure a route out myself. I am one man with intimate knowledge of only a small area of the US. To do this type of thing accurately you really need someone who knows all these areas as well as you know your own not just plotting points on a map. So I don't imagine WI was his only mistake to quote the author "if your going to do this, you might as well do it right." As admirable an effort as this may have been its all just facts, figures, and a neat map.
