The ones I attend and organize do. Not written, signed , and notorized, but everyone knows what type of share it is. I have shares with beer nerds and ones that are attended by the BMC crowd.

You don't want to roll up with Boston Lager if everyone else is bringing 00's Loons, but a lot of shelf beers are VASTLY better than RARs. It's usually a good idea to bring something appropriate for the general theme or price range.

Have a few different shares a month some with guidelines, some with none. The one my friends and I host every week we set a $$ amount, that way nobody could get pissy. (ex: This Week: Please bring 1 $18to25 bomber and 1 $15 & under brew) I enjoy popping the rarer stuff for friends to enjoy even if they dont always bring the greatest stuff... But in the end its just beer, you'll be pissing it out in a few hours anyway. Great friends, stories, experiences & company are hard to come by around these days, seems like everyone is getting married and having kids!

Well if it's a beer you've never had before go for it. It was your choice to purchase a real expensive beer, unless you made up rules like Rares only. So to me, what you want to spend is not about the beer choice its about being ad somebody spent less money.

I would be interested to learn what sort of bottle shares are attended by the BMC crowd.

I suppose it depends on the quality of one's shelf beers, doesn't it? With there now being 4000 breweries in the country, most of us now have access to very good-to-great beers at our local grocery store, gas station, and mini-mart.

We used to just call them "tailgating". Guess they went and got all fancy now.

I think it comes down to how much the person knows and is (or isn't) a beer geek. If the guy has a cellar and is bringing a local IPA bomber, then he's being selfish with his great stuff but is happy to drink yours, screw that guy. What I suspect is happening is that the original poster is a snob and is annoyed that a guy who doesn't stalk beer like we all do is showing up with a couple bottles he's never heard of because he thinks they might be interesting. It all comes down to what the guy really knows about beer and whether he's making a decent effort or not.

I also kind of like when there are some things at a share that might be stuff I could go buy regularly. I've discovered some great beers that (for one reason or another) I just never bought.

Plenty of beers on shelf that I would be very happy to see at shares.

If it is a themed share, such as "bring beers we can't get around here", etc. and they show with Shock Top, that's another story.

jeez it's hard enough to find people that care about craft beer enough to want to do bottle shares here, I don't mind treating my friends and as long as they don't bring NA's and I get a buzz it's all good in the end

A secondary response here, if I were hosting a bottle share (which I do with some regularity) and somebody refused somebody the beer they brought because of perceived inferiority of the beer the other person brought, I'd throw them out the door. So, apparently there's some pecking order who brings the biggest whale gets whatever they want, then the #2 whale gets everything but #1. Must suck to be number 4 or 5, lots of stuff that they wouldn't "deserve" to try.

there is nothing better than knowing how good a beer is and seeing other people react the same way when they try it for the first time. I don't mind sharing in the slightest, giving someone the chance to try a quality product that they have yet to experience is the whole point of craft beer IMO

Or watching people try La Folie for the first time when they've never even heard of sour beer :stuck_out_tongue:

Talk to the host. Unlike us, he is in a position to solve this "problem."
