So, I'm giving myself some leeway this week.

It was a beautiful day to raise money for a family fighting cancer. The beer mile was awful. Lap 1 I was in shock from chugging then taking off in a race. Between laps 2 and 3 I felt I was hitting my stride. On lap 4 I just wanted to be done. It all tasted like a foamy, sweet, coffee flavored mess at the time. Though I'm sure a proper review will reveal a solid stout.

I feel crummy, but happy it was for a good cause.

And as I mentioned in my post the flavor is not really green pepper to me either but there is a pungency there that I have no difficulty relating that others may perceive green pepper in this hop.

    Cheers!

Beer pours out extremely carbonated. Even with a very slow pour it's hard to control the head. Great hazy deep orange/copper color. Actually can't see though the beer. Aroma is suprisingly hop forward of tropical and citrus with an undeying funk. Funk is like a wet hay. The beer is extremely carbonated, so much so it's like needles on my tongue. Upfront hop flavors of juicy citrus and a sharp like tangerine flavor then finished by the funk with a medium plus bitterness. The beer finishes weird with the combination of funk and sharp bitterness. As the beer warms the Brett and funk increases.

Overall worth a try but considering the amount of time I waited and the cost I wouldn't buy it again.

edit: not very familiar with Brett beers and had it at noon before lunch on a super clean palate so that may have caused the bitterness to be stronger.

    Another New Brew Today.

    New American Imperial Stout Sunday!

My second new brew today, and it is definitely worth checking out. It's been awhile since I've had a very very nice brew from Avery and this one hit's the spot. Still, this one has some age on it, if it is still around I will pick up some more. I guess this time having some older brew's on the shelve helps out in my favor.

Good evening, NBS. I made it back, and I am currently drinking:
    Backwoods Bastard!!

"But wait," you say. "You did a Thursday Throwdown a couple weeks back of Backwoods vs Wulver, sent to you by a generous BA, @WesMantooth, right?"

To which I say, yes, and thanks for reading/remembering. This is far from my first dance with the Backwoods version of Founder's Bastard. However, it sets up my post. This growler was grabbed for me by @MUTINY, as I was not able to get to the store where they had tapped it. Thank you, my friend, for the beer and hosting us! In picking up said growler, the GF and I had a bottle share with @MUTINY and his GF. So this is where New Beer Sunday comes in.

First, we had Plasticene, from Ocelot Brewing, a beer which I posted the coffee nitro version of on Friday:

I wrote a quick review during a break in the action, but this Imperial Porter's taste was pretty bold on the roasted notes, mainly astringent dark roast coffee. Really seemed a bit more stout-ish than porter. Alcohol heat was present, and that came out in the nose as well, even though the roasted notes were muted to my sense of smell. Slightly rough on the feel, but I think this beer was a decent offering (the coffee nitro was much better, however)... needs a little tuning to be considered top notch, however.

    And then there was this:
The GF's friend gave this to us a while back (thanks, Scott!!), and I wanted to share the rare beer (for this area, at least) with a fellow advocate. This beer is the first beer in a while I can truly say poured like motor oil. My first pour was light and didn't bring about much head. I filled the next glass with a little more vigor and a dark tan to brown head forced its way through the black liquid to form a top to the beer. Normal drinking sustained a thin film.

We discussed the beer as we analyzed it in a group, and here's what we came up with:
    • bit of heat in the nose, licorice, molasses, chocolate liqueur
    • three of us got chocolate, I specifically got a deep, dark chocolate as the base
    • I noticed a tart cherry-ish note I get in some BA stouts that I have trouble describing, and @MUTINY's GF hit on a better description for the flavor when she mentioned prune. I also could see cocoa, and I did get some of the licorice from the nose
    • everyone seemed to agree the feel was quite thick and I thought the feel was very velvety, almost like a nice cocoa with marshmallows that have almost entirely melted
Then there was this piece of information (which we found before we drank the beer, and which I never really checked before popping it open):

A very powerful brew that I was glad to get to try. Of course, there is a chance this beer is completely different after 7 years, so I will not post a rating/review. However, this would likely be in the 4.4-4.5 range as it drank today.

Sorry for long post, but it covers about 4 hours of the day earlier .

Although low in abv, and pretty light bodied, not sure that would have been my first choice in beer (probably go with something like a Brooklyn Lager), but well done good sir, and congrats on completing it successfully

Moonglow is a hazy, very effervescent deep amber beer with a slight amount of yeast sediment and a large, creamy, ancient-ivory colored head that leaves nice, thick migratory swaths of fine-grained lacing. The nose is appropriately moderate in intensity: a properly-balanced blend of banana/clove spice, yeast and wheaty malt, topped by boozy overtones. The palate follows the nose: a nice blend of spices over a sweetish, slightly caramel wheat malt foundation with assertive, deep boozy notes and yeast on the back end. The malt flavors and the esters combine to produce a sweet, nuanced banana character that combines nicely with the alcohol, making it a part of the characteristic flavor of the beer rather than a detriment to it. The finish is pretty clean: there's just a bit of booze and wheat to be seen, both of which vanish quickly, leaving a hint of spice that lingers for a few minutes. The mouthfeel is a bit biggish for the light-medium body, and warming from the alcohol; the texture is expectedly creamy and very peppery from the fizzy carbonation. Very drinkable for the ABV- the alcohol is hidden in plain sight. (12 oz bottle, 286 days before best-by)

Definitely more power to @GRPunk for going with that beer. Weren't you asking for options earlier this week? If so, I think some BAs might have been f-ing with you .

    Pike Brewing Extra Stout

Big thick chocolate head which settles down pretty quick, sans lacing on top this black as night beer.

Nose is chocolate, molasses and not too much else.

Taste is doing the same thing, but brings in a little coffee and bitterness to join the chocolate and molasses.

Mouthfeel is silky and smooth and generally pleasant as all hell! Such a pleasant drinking experience.

Good afternoon, all! Hope you're enjoying the brief return of summer on this, the Feast of All Saints, and thanks to @cavedave for kicking things off again today.

Some friends of mine are members of the Craft Beer Club, and they recently presented me with an assortment of four of their latest club beers. One of them was Monkeynaut IPA, from Straight to Ale in Huntsville, AL. First one from this brewery, and an Alabama tick to boot! This one clocks in at 7.25% ABV, 70 IBU. Poured from cold 12-ounce can into Spiegelau IPA glass.

A - Hazy, deep copper color; three-finger head of dense white foam that lingered for several minutes. Lots of sticky lacing. Particularly striking appearance when viewed in sunlight.

S - Hop forward, notes of grapefruit zest and pine resin. A little more maltiness came through as it warmed.

T/F - The flavor profile followed the aroma profile quite closely: hop forward, notes of citrus and pine at first, them some malt sweetness as it neared cellar temperature. Dry finish, bitter, somewhat resiny.

O - A solid, enjoyable IPA, right in the wheelhouse.

I wish I could have reviewed Crime and/or Punishment for NBS. These showed up in the bottle shop today, and I've been dying to try them. At $18.99 per, though, it ain't happening any time soon.

    Prost!

The new Bastard has a bit more coconut notes (or vanilla, or both - I interpret it differently in each sip), a very enjoyable improvement from what I recall. The bourbon taste is definitely present, but the alcohol flavor that comes with the burn seems more indistinct (of course, it's fairly fresh, I would assume). Thoroughly loving taking sips from it while watching football.

I believe we all thoroughly enjoyed the Dark Lord. The feel was amazing, and the boldness of the nose and taste after that long was impressive (having never had a beer aged that long, I wasn't sure what to expect). I could maybe see it having a little more heat fresher, but maybe not, and maybe one day I will find out .

Greetings fellow NBS'ers, there has been an abundance of nice reads in here so far, thanks all for sharing. I have had a four pack of this beer in my cellar for quite some time now, but still have not sat down and tried one, much less fully reviewed one. Avery is near and dear to me, quite literally and figuratively. Their new brewery location is just a matter of steps away from the house I was lucky enough to grow up in. I have since moved away, and have not gotten to visit the new location, though I will be in December. Anyways, I thought this weekend was as good of a time as any to open up one of these —

12oz bottle of Batch No. 1 Bottled Sept 12 2014 17.22% ABV. 5 oz pour into a 15oz glass for tasting purposes.

A — Poured slowly and carefully. We end up with a dark brown, nearly black, super rich looking liquid in the glass. There is a delayed peanut-brittle colored head that forms, but settles quick quickly into a thin ringed layer of lace around the edges atop the beer, lacing is almost nonexistent, though there are almost legs to this. Even with the slow pour there is a large amount of sediment in this beer when held up to the light. Large chunks of sediment here, perhaps some of the yeast, or spices, or barrel, or any of the above components. Not the greatest looking beer ever, but it does seem evident that this spent time in a barrel, and was likely unfiltered.

S — Aromas abound out of the bottle and glass, especially is this one warms. There are great notes of pumpkin, notes of fresh pumpkin in a jar. Notes of spices range from fresh ground cinnamon, to lightly toasted cloves, notes of allspice, cinnamon, nutmeg, both fresh and dried. There isn't any ginger listed but I get a bit of a ginger kick alongside all the cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice. There is a nice crusty pumpkin pie-crust like aroma as well. Let's not forget the dominant bourbon and alcohol kick here either, this sucker is quite hot, get a lot of vanilla, oak, cinnamon, char, and heat not unlike a decent Bourbon.

T — Taste evolved much as the nose does, there is a real depth of flavor, ranging from sweet and rich, to dry and spicy. There is a great range here that starts with sweet chocolaty notes, developing into a real spicy and chewy melange of flavors. Lots of cinnamon, like chewing on a piece of fresh cinnamon bark. Allspice, nutmeg, and clove are present as well, with a balanced and not overdone spice level, just all seems to find a balance here somehow. Errs on the hot side of the spectrum, but the flavors are all there, there is a nice balance that is quite remarkable.

M — Medium-Full bodied, gets thicker as it warms, quite a lingering sweetness and heat level to this is quite apparent. Warms the whole way down, does manage to mellow out slightly as you take each sip.

O — Pretty nice overall, if there is any detriment here it is the spice level paired with the heat and alcohol burn level is almost overdone, almost. This is a great showcase of Bourbon, matched up with a plethora of spices.
