Has anyone else ever gotten to the point where everything in their cellar is for their own consumption and you have absolutely no more worthy trade bait?

After about 3 years of trading, I think I'm finally at the point where I have nothing else worth trading. What do I do now? Do I finally start trying all the locals I've neglected for so many years? Should I just suck it up and hit more releases? Has this happened to you? What have you done?

What is started doing is lurking the regional forum for people traveling through my area... Then throw a little tasting with them as the guest of honor.

Unrelated note; I'll be on the east coast at the end of September...

I've been not trading for a few months now. I think the only beers that I'll step back in the ring for are Alpine or Deschutes Red Chair.

I (and especially you, Jim) live in good enough beer states where you don't need to send good beer out for inferior beer

Well, I guess I mean, start drinking local and not just stuff I've gotten from trades.

same Jim. Been waiting on releases, but they seem to be becoming rarer and rarer these days. Gratitude broke. BA SC is M.I.A. CL has gone silent.
my only solace is finding imperial biscotti breaks at my local store.
    dark days, my friend.

whereas i first started with the stony brook john harvards and bluepoint, i had always gotten the impression you skipped that part. i find now that all the locals i used to dig now don't do anything for me. it's hard to go back to that once you've acquired a taste for rare.
    maybe homebrew?
    good luck.

I'm coming on a roadtrip (with wife & kids) with a final destination of Hilton Head SC.
We were originally thinking of coming down through Louisville then Nashville before cutting across and heading east

We are leaving on Tuesday morning (sept 18?) and will be camping our way down to SC til we check into condo on Friday morning.

We can choose an alternate route if there's a good enough reason...
    Any suggestions welcome!

A romantic beach bottle share with Bobby Light? That would be hard to turn down!

you come out to LI more often and drink the stuff we've traded for. i'm working hard to get to the point of local only.

would love to have you out to a tasting if you detour to downstate NY (NYC or LI would be best).

Would host a tasting for you in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area based on the blogpost alone! Maybe post a thread on the South-Atlantic forum as the time approaches? It might seem conceited, but I think you can pull it off

I reached that point after a one week stretch during Philly Beer Week. Pretty much everything I'd been putting away, of any noteworthiness, got polished off in those 7-10 days. I went from over 200 bottles to under 100. Most of what I had left were my favorites...one or two of each. Trading from what I have left seems sorta pointless, somehow, anymore. Feels like a bunch of lateral moves. However, feel better about where I'm at. I think like many people I suffered a bit from trying to wait for some kinda special occasion to crack certain bottles. After a while, I realized I had more bottles (and forever adding) than such occasions existed. What I realized, was that Tuesday evening with any person that enjoys great beer, was just such an occasion. Something else changed my trading habits too. The realization that the beer I was trading for, wasn't in most instances better than what I had...and if it was, not by much. Certainly not enough to justify the mint I was spending on trading via shipping & handling costs. I've started buying a lot of beer by the case, especially stouts and barleywines. They're my favorite styles, and they have some longevity from a storage perspective. So...I load up on the stuff I enjoy when I'm fortunate enough to come across it...and occasionally I shoot on over to Tired Hands for some nice stuff on draft. I finally got to a point where it's ok that my beer drinking buddies have hundreds and hundreds of good bottles...and I do not. What I do have is good beer, and I'm enjoying it. Guess I finally get the point of this whole thing.

Because the minute I get bottles of rare releases I send them off to regular traders. So I have nothing left to trade. But it's all good. Happy to share the wealth.
