Hey folks. Thought I'd ping for your perspectives.

We just released the 2015 versions of Crime and of Punishment. They are rather significantly different than the last release (which was the 2013 version). The heat factor is significantly lower, and the flavors come out a lot better. I'm loving them, but I don't want to get all promoty here, so I'll leave it at that. ;-]-=

So the question is, should they get new listings? I know some versions of beers get a new listing each time a new one comes out, and some don't, so thought I'd ask.

They still have plenty going on, and I verified my 81 year old mother still says that Crime is her favorite beer we make (although she also told me she wants a case of the Encore version of the Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic too). So no worries, they weren't wimpified (which means that those who prefer to complain that a beer that is promoted as being hot is actually as advertised, will still be able to do so...wouldn't seem fair to take that away from some folks as it seems dearly important to them).

I suppose I could have pinged Todd or Jason with this, but then that didn't quite give me the same opportunity to start a thread and just say a random "Hi!" to everyone. Hope it's OK for a brewery owner to start a thread other than "Hey, we're selling out to the man...let me spin it and tell you why you should think that's OK" as the topic.

    Cheers!

    Greg

Hahaha nice little jab there at the end. Not my favourite Stone beers, but I see no problem with an additional listing, specially if the recipes are different like you say. Cheers.

Arrogant bastard is a truly awesome brew, and it seems to be a solid vehicle for "variants" as well. Too bad oaked AB was sort of phased out, although I have seen some BBA ones around occasionally.

Hopefully the richmond location increases my exposure to Stone 500ml barrel aged brews. Kentucky is WAY closer to VA after all.

Right now the 08 encore has two listings and they still have the original listed...which if it's the same beer why we have it listed 3 times is beyond me?

If the bottle clearly states that you've made changes, that would make sense to me to list it as a new version. That said I haven't and won't be trying it. It turns out the peppers used in those which I'd never heard of seem to be the worst tasting things in the history of humanity...and they finish with the flavors of vomit. Or at least that's what the beer tasted like, and I love the base and bourbon so what else can i blame?

I think for a new listing you really need a different name for the beer (why not Crime/Punishment 2.0?). I'm glad you posted this though, I'm interested to try the new version.

Salty, yet still tongue firmly in cheek. I'll enjoy this thread, I think.

Hey @StoneGreg , what's the distro looking like on this?

And fwiw, significant changes to recipe/barrel aging (cognac vs bourbon) or extra adjuncts need a new listing IMO, not so much just dialing the heat back a bit and cleaning up existing flavors if the basic ingredients are the same.

    Pepcid at the ready!

I am 99.99% sure I am going to regret this post but…

When I read the title of this post I thought it was concerning a beer from the Crime and Punishment Brewing Company: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/34326/

    Cheers!

I think if the new release is that different then it merits a new listing, the ratings for each release before this one are effectively for a different beer so it'd sort of skew things. Hopefully I see this in my neck of the woods, I've been interested in trying these for a little while.

What was that, did someone say arrogant bastard 6 packs?! I'm all for it. Oh, they didn't. Well, Not sure if crime and punishment should get new listings for a modified recipe. Did the coffee milk stout get a new listing? I say let them continue on with the current listings and if they are better, it'll be reflected in a higher rating and the latest reviews will be positive. Seems like a modified name is the only way to get a new listing around here.

Anyone aged these before? Greg would the new ones age for better or worse in your opinion

I personally didn't think the 2013 was hot enough

I'm actually interested in them this year. I loved both of the labels last time, but they were way too hot sounding for me to drop the money. This time, I'll be grabbing them for sure.

    Also, more Dostoevsky-inspired beers/beer names/labels please!

I picked up a bottle of Punishment out of curiousity. I'm glad to hear the heat isn't as extreme. I don't mind heat, but I assumed from past reviews that I wasn't going to be able to finish the bottle. I generally love the overwhelming majority of Stone products, so we will see.

Given the reduced heat, maybe you should have changed the names to Misdemeanor and Discipline. Of course I'll leave the branding to the experts, but you definitely would have received new listings and ratings then.

The beers have already been aged for you. They're ready to go. That being said, there's no hurry to consume them and could likely wait years.

I saw Crime on the shelf at a place in NJ and was totally surprised. I had no idea it was being rereleased. That's so awesome I can't wait to drink mine.

To answer the question, I definitely think it deserves its own listing.
