I have heard a lot about this old style, and I am wondering if there are any classic examples left. I understand they are adjunct lagers and somewhat resemble German Pilseners.

What are they like compared to well known pilsners and how can I get my hands on some?

I don't know of any commercial examples. Our hometown brewpub is making one though and I am glad to see them do it. When people think of adjunct they think of the macro brewers and the sweetness of those. Seems to me that they rely on that corny sweetness to make up for the fact that those beers have very little body. The classic american pilsner has plenty of body . I had the chance to try @JackHorzempa 's Classic American Pilsner and it was a delight. it is just like the regular pilsner except it uses up to 30 percent flaked maize. The corn taste is lovely and like a toasted ear of corn. it really adds an American flavor to the beer. It is not sweet. The hops should be noble or american varieties similar to noble hops. This is a satisfying beer. it has lots of body, lots of flavor and if you find it you will like I guarantee.

The BJCP lists Anchor California Lager and Coors Batch 19 as examples. Some brewpubs have examples from time to time.

CAP is a style that would change the opinion of many towards adjuncts. I make one every year.

Straub produces a CAP they brand as 1872 Lager. It is available now as part of their Legacy variety pack. Straub has limited distribution: PA and Ohio I believe.

I think 1872 Lager is a good beer but I prefer my homebrewed CAP.

    Cheers!

Maybe, but according to Anchor's web site California Lager doesn't use adjuncts, just 2-Row pale -- but it's a good beer that flies under the radar. In fact, I need to revisit it soon.

I should have checked the Anchor beer. It was probably included as there were all malt Pre-Prohibition beers, and that is what the category is now. Trommer's was all malt.

Tivoli Beer just started brewing their beer again recently. It's kind of an older, forgotten beer, but at their peak, they were the biggest brewer in the US. It's pretty limited distribution for now, but I know they are looking to vigorously expand their market.

:grimacing: When was that? Figures (incomplete) I have, post-Repeal, shows they were probably never larger than ~100k bbl. in the post-Repeal era. Pre-Pro when the brewery's name was "Milwaukee Brewery Co." they were at the 14-16k bbl level in the 1890s.

The Denver brewery had a rated capacity of 100 -125k bbl./yr in the 1940-1960 period according to several industry sources.

And, remember Tivoli spelled backwards is "I Lov it" !

Is batch 19 even still around? I feel like I haven't seen it.

Ive never heard of a classic American Pilsner, other than miller lite putting in on their brand, which to me is not a pilsner anyway. Ive seen things like Sixpoint do the crisp which exclaimed old world brought back new school. Ive never had Beach Haus Pilsner although i live in NJ because i havent heard good things but im willing to try. But at $10 a six id rather grab an import as im afraid i wont like it since i dont like sweeter pilsners im afraid itll be sweet for some reason

Edit, they can have a little corn and malt flavor, but finish dry.

Joe's Premium from Avery? Canned, should be able to find it with a bit of work/trade.

    description:

"a contemporary rendition of a classic style. Hopped with purpose, Joe's is beautifully bitter and dry with an abundance of floral, Noble German hops. Uber-sessionable. Utterly American. This is Premium American Pilsner."

Tivoli's current beer is supposed to be a Bavarian helles. I don't think it has any adjuncts. At least none of the draft versions. No clue about that weird bottled version Hall brewed for them once.
When Prost re-introduced it in 2012 it was designed as an Andechser Hell clone. It has changed several times since then, but it was back to being pretty good the last time I had it.

I like Beach Haus a lot, but I did not realize it was a CAP and brewed with some maize. Thanks.

I think Beach Haus is worth trying if you haven't had it, but don't expect something mind-blowing. It's balanced malt with a distinct snap of hops on the back end just enough to make it interesting without fatiguing the palate, which is exactly what I look for in a pilsner, CAP or otherwise. (EDIT: Ignore BA's score for Beach Haus, most reviewers have no idea how to review a pilsner, or any beer that doesn't punch them in the mouth with flavors)

I've never drank because the only time I saw it for sale I couldn't find a bottling or best by date. Have never seen it on tap at all. I would try a CAP asap if I knew it was fresh.
