It's hit some shelves in SA (Gabriel's and NW Food Mart are the specific ones that I know of). Big Hops Huebner will be selling it on Black Friday.

I picked up 2 bottles @ Spec's in Austin on Monday afternoon. I was looking so forward to trying this years batch.! We opened a bottle Monday night while watching MNF . It was very sour , infected .? I Had to return them both back to the store. Saw that they had pulled them all back-Not for sale...! I love (512) & I drink Pecan porter always when I see it on Tap ! I love it. !, but something is wrong with this BA. Pecan porter....? Anyone else taste the sour notes on this one.? I would love to know what you think ? Thanks ...

I would have a hard time believing this 2015 batch is tasting sour already. 512 just delivered the bottles Monday, if there were problems with it, they would have held them back.

Plus even if there are legitimate infection issues, no way would you be able to taste it this early.

Sure it wasn't the 2014 batch?

Yes , I'm sure it was the 2015 batch, 512- Did not release any in 2014 bottles.! I'm sure both me & a friend both, picked up on this tart tasting sour note . I'm a big fan of 512 pecan porter. I always look for it on tap.! Very good ! I would love to here from others that have tried this beer.?

The tartness is more than likely from the wood, not an infection. It's a common flavor with barrel aging, especially if it was kept in the barrel too long or if it's fresh wood. Morgul from Real Ale was very tart because it was aged in virgin barrels. @mph005 is right, it's way too early for an infection to be coming out and there is no way (512) would release infected bottles. You should have held on to that other bottle and let the wood mellow out.

Which store was that? It seemed that they were flying off the shelves in town.

I opened one the other day and me and my friend thought it was tart as well. A little disappointing given they took so long to get these bottles out this year. We had it at the Texas craft beer fest this year and i could swore they said it was this years batch and it tasted great there. Different story when i opened the bottle the other night.

Definitely a tartness to it. And yes, I can tell the difference between sour/infected and tart. Opened numerous bottles of 2014, some good, some not, all opened at varying times throughout the year and the flavors were across the board with no consistency in terms of those aged longer were more sour or less. I took a chance and purchased a 2015 bottle after trying it at draughthouse. I wondered if the draughthouse version was 2014 and I'll leave it at that. The guy working didn't know. The bottle was a bit less tart, but that taste was still very distinct. I understand it can be a flavor imparted onto the beer, but in all honesty, I purchased a whiskey barrel aged porter, not a tart porter. I have a hard time believing this is the product they want to release for WPADPP, but I'm not the brewer or owner so to each their own. I've tasted it when it's great and when it's on point, it's a delicious beer. But when it's off, it's an $18 waste for me. If I want tart, I'll buy a different style.

Some don't mind the tartness and that's great, no love lost  Different strokes.

I thought they said it was 100% in Jack Daniels barrels this year

EDIT - that was for the batch that was supposed to come out in February, that they dumped. Perhaps they changed barrels

Out of the several dozen barrel aged beers that I've had. The only tart tasting ones ended up being infected. Some might get really bad and some might stay in check some. And some might be fine. But tart should not be a flavor in a BA porter/stout unless it was meant to be that way. Out of all of the great BA stouts and porters that I've had, none were tart. Given the history of these guys inconsistencies with bottling beer and this one in particular, I will be staying away from buying bottles. Hate to say that about the home town guys but it is what it is.
