So I know this definitely sounds silly, but I'm wondering if any brewery has made a grey IPA. Something brewed with wheat and roasted malts. I'm sure that the roasted malts would take over but maybe having them take up a third or less of what goes into the beer would create a balance that's worth drinking. I've had both, but never tried mixing the two. Next time they're both in my fridge, I'll definitely try mixing em in different ratios, but I'd like to know if you all know of any properly brewed "grey ipas" or tried your own mixtures.

Didn't Lagunitas blend their Nighttime and Daytime into Eclipse or something?

That's actually a hilarious concept to me for some reason. I'm picturing something that's hefeweizen cloudy and basically looks like old mop water. Theoretically you could get close by using some sort of de-husked roasted malt, like Carafa III, so you get all of the color and not a lot of the bitterness. So lots of wheat for haze, and a little highly-kilned malt and you might be close.

In reality, it would probably be more brown than gray, but it's fun to think about.

As soon as someone decides it's a good marketing idea, it will exist. "Let's make a Blue IPA!" "What's in it?" "It doesn't matter, it will be the first Blue IPA. Maybe we incorporate rosemary and some volcanic salt of some sort".

As silly as it sounds at first, someone has probably made something like that. Might be good, who knows.

I would figure a "Grey IPA" would include European Hops and infused with Earl Grey Tea....

I get it. Because Grey is a combination of Black and White.

But a White IPA is more about the hefe yeast than the wheat malt (many IPAs are already brewed with some wheat), so it would be more along the lines of a hoppy dunkel. That said, while Belgian stouts are fairly common, there are few stouts brewed with hefe yeast, which might be some indication that the flavors do not work well together.

I'm partially confused by quite a bit, but I'm positive breweries already do such things and state that is what they are using with them on the label so there's no need to further confuse an already confused buying public with something that sounds a bit brackish and non potable. Just instruct them to read the effing label.

Forget about the grain bill, dishwater would have to be used.

My suspicion is that most of these combinations have been tried on local level and there is a reason why we don't find them on the shelf.
