Just finished the movie of the same name as the thread's title (recommended) in which birding enthusiasts seek out as many unique species of birds possible in one year, and of course I applied this idea to beer and started wondering: How many unique beers has anyone had in one calendar year? Doesn't matter if you've had the beer before, but you can't count the same one twice in the same year. Let's throw down some numbers.

I know this number will quickly be trampled and spat on as the big dogs pass by, but very roughly, I figure I probably have about 140-200 different beers yearly.

Also, let this now be know as the hobby of beering.

Not being a jerk, but what qualifies as a unique beer?

Probably anything, as long as you only count it once.

I just mean only counting any one beer one time per year. 1000 Westy 12's=1 unique beer, 1 Bud Light=1 unique beer.

Ahhh my bad...I get what you are saying. Hmmm, I'd have to think on that.

If you are counting pours from beer festivals like GABF, etc, that number can escalate quickly...

That is a great movie! Saw it on HBO in India...Goa I believe.

I've kept a database for eleven years and can say I've averaged about 160 new beers per year during that period. Before that would be a guess.

As for total beers, I'm not sure NASA has a computer that could handle that download.

I'm estimating 450+ including samples this year. A pretty weak number now that I type it out

Figured it out, averaging about 1.9 unique beers per day since I started this craft beer thing last year. Of course, some days I may not have a unique beer, but some days I have several. What a great trip its been !!!!!!

Excluding samples, I'm at 416 unique beers. Only one macro brew on the list, and only because a cute gal got it for me.

I am averaging 354 unique beers per year since 2008 (excluding samples), which is when I began keeping track. Just about one beer a day average. But, it looks like I'm only at 255 so far this year, must be a down year somehow.

If I include small samples then I am probably around 600. Hard to know the exact number of non-new beers as I do not keep that database. I would actually love to know who holds the record if you exclude say any sample under 5 oz. Believe it or not that probably gets me about 100.

Looks like 379 since Nov 21 of last year. Doesn't sound that bad as long as you don't think about how many non unique beers you drink.

For the record, samples definitely count. Yes, it's an easy way to rack up a ton of beers, and yes you almost surely don't get the full experience of the beer, but in the movie they only had to glimpse the birds, or even identify it by song, not observe it for an hour.

And come to think of it, from visiting a bunch of new breweries and getting flights at just about every one, my number is probably more like 200-260. Still second to last place, but it's a great ride!

Looks like I have rated 198 so far this year, I figure there are probably 20-30 more, at most, that I didn't tick.
