Turkey Day Tale

Went to a party late this summer, and, like any good guest, stopped at a nearby bottle shop on the way to pick up some beer.

Tickers gotta tick, so I decided to go with a variety pack in the cooler by Baxter Brewing Co. The box of the pack in front was a little beat up. Actually had some packing tape around it to hold it together. But generous guy that I am, I decided to get it anyhow. Who cares if the packaging got ripped a little, right?

Turns out not only was the packaging beat up, but a lot of the beers inside were past their prime. Here's the one I have left -- with a canning date of 5/9/15.





It's a Pamola Xtra Pale Ale, a little dinged, but said to have a "draught beer taste, fit for the camp, lake, bbq, mountain, hike, picnic, beach, cooler, backpack, fridge and/or golf course." Hopefully, couch works, too.

Damn, it actually looks pretty good. A hazy, orange-gold color with two fingers of lush white head.



The aroma is a little muted. Comes across with a lager-style smell at first, giving way to some biscuity malt, maybe a little orange rind and pineapple, when you really put your snout in it.

Honestly, at this point I'm worrying that I'd completely failed at Turkey Day, picking out a beer that, while not at it's best, is still plenty drinkable -- but, no, eww, the taste saves me.

The taste is staler than this joke. It's like a dirty sock you dry out in the sun for a couple days (you guys do that, too, right?). You can sort of pick out the malt backbone and a touch of fruity hops, but only between wretches.

I'm hoping finishing the beer isn't an important part of this holiday, because as much as I'm in the "don't waste beer" camp, this is a drain pour.

Ladies, gentleman, and other BAs I have to tell ya ... as of today I have been on the planet for half a century. So far so good.

 

Got a little into late night last night. Started the day with water. Then set up this as the GF takes the cats to the vet.


Couldn't drink the beer @5EKF sent without the GF, so maybe a brunch beer of that. @TongoRad, @Ozzylizard, @MUTINY - I found another option that was in the house for later on today, gotta get my turkeys chilled down. I'd love to use my last homebrew as well, but it's actually not so bad (to me). Can't wait to see what people come up with.

Edit: reviewed this beer comparing to my 3.69 straight rating and review last year. One of the biggest shifts up for a beer I've had. Always good to revisit, especially if lots of other people enjoy a beer.

Ran out of clean glasses so I had to bottle-drink this one. I must say, I'm not a fan of all the weird off-flavors/aromas in this one.

 

Improves quite a bit with a year on it.
