Definitely one thing that seems to be ignored in reviews pretty frequently, but to me it's one of the top factors in determining a beer's appearance. What beers have you found to have excellent head retention? I'm drinking a Boulevard Tank 7 currently and I've found that it rivals anything else I've had in terms of head retention.

Agreed. It would be nicer to see a greater emphasis placed on this element - the appearance of a nice head on a beer makes it so much more appetizing. It especially looks nice when you are 3/4 done with your beer, but there is still a nice inch of foam at the top.

I thought the first 12 pack of SN Celebration I had, had great HR. Creamy! Come to think of it so do all of the beers I've had from them. I usually mention this in my reviews, or at least the quality and look of the head.

Haha, just came here to say this. The head retention on Celebration is phenomenal.

The head on Trilium's PM Dawn Stout is pretty fantastic. Long lasting and delicious.

Definitely very nice when it happens.

Any wheat beer. The proteins in the wheat, and other adjuncts too, increase head retention. Unfiltered IPA's are also great. The iso-alpha acids from the hops help stabilize foam.

    +1 for Celebration

True, sours don't have the best head retention. For a gose or berliner, mashing at a very low temperature with minimal malt doesn't help.

I could honestly give a rats ass about head retention when judging appearance. It's all about the color to me.

This is true, obviously it's not a major expectation for sours, gose, Berliner weisse, and ultra high-abv stouts (and I'm sure there's plenty of BAs for whom those are the only styles that matter).

...unless you are pounding a beer as fast as you can, no beer has an inch of foam when you are 3/4 of a way through it

Head retention is relevant to certain styles . A beer that is very high in abv or in acidity will not retain a head as well. I do not want to see a false head on my beer like I saw with southern tiers one buffalo. (menaing that head was made to last an inordinately long time and you notice it right away) I also don't want to see a dirty head. If you start to really observe your beer you can see what I mean by dirty. Sometimes it means that the malts colored the head in a way that showed it dirty or sometimes it means that floaters can be found in it. A moussy head that never goes away on a pils would be wrong. On a blegian that's a bit different.

Can you elaborate a bit on how the head of this beer is false? I'm imagining a bar tender handing you a glass while he tucks a bottle of insta-head behind his back.
