I prefer a well made BA stout over the regular stout. That being said however, there are not a whole lot of well made BA stouts that I can enjoy year round given my budget, so a regular stout will do just fine.

Jeebus, have you read the "we ruined BCBS thread"? I've never done so much googling in my life trying to figure out all the acronyms on that thread. :stuck_out_tongue:

I read the first few comments and decided I didn't want to go down that road.

I like them both. Which one I pick depends on the brewer and the barrel. Lots of bourbon left over in the barrel tends to push my preference towards BA.

I don't want to have to choose one ro the other. I don't really drink a lot of stouts but when I look for them I can't say that I prefer one over the other.

Ba Stouts all day as well. But I drink very little Stouts as well, but I tend towards maybe 3-4-5 and that's it. Bcbs and Kbs, Eclipse, Big Bad Baptist, Event Horizion. From Non Ba , FBS, Ten Fidy.

I haven't tried anything barrel aged and even I feel tired of seeing everything being barrel aged. I need to try a good BA beer to make up my mind.

I don't mind some barrel time, but if the bourbon is overpowering the other flavors then I may as well drink boilermakers. One that I've tried that had overpowering bourbon was Dragon's Milk, while Backwoods Bastard was well balanced.

I wouldn't say that I ALWAYS prefer barrel-aged stouts, but the addition of barrel aging often does improve upon the base beer so I voted for it. A lot of my top rated beers here have been barrel-aged (Parabola, KBS) but I would agree that in some instances (such as with Abraxas or Speedway) it's superfluous and the barrel flavor ends up smothering the intent of the base beer and thus obfuscating its original individuality.

A few months ago, I'd have been 100% barrel-aged, but I've had a LOT of mediocre stuff recently. Too many brewers out there using the same dictionary:

    Barrel (noun)
    1. a cylindrical wooden container with slightly bulging sides made of staves hooped together, and with flat, parallel ends.
    2. a magical vessel with the ability to turn crap into gold.

I love both but would probably prefer Parabola over any non-barrel aged stout any day.

Love barrels but if I could drink Bells 30th everyday there would be no need for a barrel....unless they throw 30th into a barrel.

I can get behind this line of thinking. I'd still require access to the regular though. Sometime this winter I'm going to do a side-by side with Expo stout. I have quite a stash of both built up.

I prefer barrel aged but I like to watch my figure and therefore only drink a handful a beers a year, most being BA.

Barrel aged stouts wind up tasting all the same. I'm on the non BA boat.
