Im perplexed, the closest brewery to my house is FOUNDERS. I buy and drink alot of their stuff and never, ever feel like I'm getting mediocre beer. In fact, I feel their beers are far and away higher than average. I guess I'm just spoiled.

If I desire a "Mediocre" beer, I desire a Mediocre beer. Doesn't mean it has to be Local.

Stuff I take home is good beer but I go to local tap rooms and if the crowd is nice I will drink mediocre beer.

if I'm out at a bar that has mediocre beer all around, local mediocre always wins.

Hell no...I like to try local beers, but one and done if they are lacking. As previously said, too many good beers and too few available calories for drinking poor beer.

I would never buy a beer I think is only mediocre, local or not. I'm buying what's fresh and what I like.

Living in Maryland, when I travel home to PA to visit family I will always try and pick up beer that is local to PA and beer I know doesn't get distro in Maryland. Maybe it turns out to be mediocre, but so be it; I'm all for trying new beers and discovering what's out there.

I only end up with mediocre local beer when I'm outside of Boston. Ask the beer guy or bartender at places in NH, RI, or upstate NY (work and family locations) for local recommendations and often end up with some real garbage.

It's funny how it works out that as the price goes up, the mediocrity often goes down.

No. In the days of micro breweries, I did support local to grow the market (late 80s-90s). Today, there are more than enough options. I live in the South Bay Area which has only mediocre beer (Hermitage, Strike, Santa Clara Brewing, Gordan Bierch). It kills me that I have to go one hour to get good beer (Discretion, Fraction, Cellarmaker). So, I stick to beer bars and liquor stores.

You waste a shitload of money. God forbid you read some reviews amongst many sites or post asking for suggestions amongst many forums. Then take what you know about your past good beer experiences and extrapolate to the future. No one does that. Everyone drinks everything.

While many people who take the time to post on BA may not intentionally drink local mediocre beer, a significant amount of 'craft beer drinkers' do exactly this.

When I lived in Ontario I did this on occasion to support a couple of very local breweries who were making decent but not great beer. I suspect my mind set has changed on this issue and since I've been in Asia for the last 3 1/2 years it's not a situation that arises. Currently I buy the best beer that is available to me, which fortunately is of very high quality.

...I thought the whole meaning of life was to... to explore strange new beers, to seek out new beer and breweries, to drink what no man has drunk before.

Then the camera pans out and the beership Enterprise flies by some unidentified brewpub...

To answer the question it depends on the situation; if I'm going to party where I know people won't enjoy craft beer, then I buy locally brewed mediocre beer. I've found out the hard way that advertising work on most people, but not me.
