Being a lover of black licorice, especially during this time of year, I am searching out some anise/licorice bombs. Let me hear your suggestions, bonus points for beer available in the Midwest.

    The Muddy by Goose Island.

I've tried many beers that people claimed to taste like black licorice, but I feel like The Muddy is the only one I've had that very distinctively reminded me of it.

Also, you're a good man. I don't much trust people who don't like black licorice (96% of the population by my estimate).

Bell's Kalamazoo Stout is made with Brewers Licorice, which leaves only a subtle hint. I'll be watching this thread with interest, though, as I share your passion for that flavor...

Man, I just realized a shot of Jeag in an Impy Stout might be awesome.

I agree, but that beer was rather disappointing otherwise. YMMV

While I don't think it contains black licorice, I think Bell's Expedition Stout tastes just like black licorice.

Having noted that, I dislike black licorice greatly, so I haven't revisited that beer for awhile. Yes, I've had it both aged and fresh and neither agreed with my palate. I know I am in the minority.

I wouldn't say disappointing ... more underwhelming. I guess that's a synonym. I definitely didn't think it was bad though.

I'd say you're in the minority of not liking Expedition Stout, but not in disliking black licorice. Personally, I don't recall tasting any (or if any, barely any) black licorice in Expedition Stout. If I did, I'd probably somehow like it even more.

Not a stout, but Unibroue La Resolution has a great black licorice flavor.

Stone Belgo Anise IRS was the most licorice-forward beer I've ever had. It was delicious. (Note: Most BAs seemed to think it was an abomination that should be killed with fire.)

It was only a one-off beer, in 2011, but there may be bottles around if you want to try trading for them. (The link shows 161 Gots and 4 FT.) I'll bet they'll still be licorice-heavy, more than 4 years later.

I got a bit of Licorice when I cracked my 14' Abyss this year.

I agree with this one. One of the few I got licorice from.

I didn't get any licorice out of The Muddy. Still a good stout though.

Funny you mention that. One of the first Expeditions I tried 5 or 6 years back had an excellent black licorice flavor....I have been chasing that ever since. I have also tried The Muddy, and it had a decent licorice flavor. The rest of the beer was just alright though. Going to have to try a few of the other suggestions, especially Labyrinth.

    As uttered by Satan. Routinely.

I firmly believe that no good can come from that vile substance. And I LIKE licorice...
