In today's NY Times an interesting article about the possibility of close ties between exercise and beer.
The Close Ties Between Exercise and Beer http://nyti.ms/1IoI7nP

Do you exercise often or see any correlation between exercise and beer?

I walk every day for an hour and do light resistance training 3 times a week.
But I don't do group sports. I average about 1-2 beers each day.
So perhaps the group factor isn't the key reason for a relationship between beer consumption and exercise.

I exercise so I can drink beer without putting on weight.

I definitely exercise to offset all the beer that I drink.

When I was in the AF, the fighter pilots always had a fridge full of beer available in the squadron after their sorties and we always questioned how "medicinal" they truly were v. drinking just because they could, but the flight docs always seemed to defend the act as therapeutic after the stress of G forces and such. Based on that argument, I could see a post workout beer having the same effect, placebo or not.

I used to go 4 - 7 times a week but massive fatigue that has set in on me in the past few months has limited me to 1 - 3 times (fatigue not caused by gym drop off - WAS going 5 times a week when I started to peter out...). But regardless of 1 - 3 or 4 - 7, I don't typically drink through the week and always hit it harder in gym and drinking on the weekends, but not out of a chicken or the egg causation question. Regardless of when I do either, I never really thought that the activities were mutual in any way.

In my country (Chile), playing a soccer game with friends is the perfect excuse to drink beer afterwards. We call it the "third half"

I think to myself, "I should exercise today," but instead decide to drink a beer and plan on exercising the next day. :grinning:

I strength train 4 times a week with some cardio thrown in. My wife and I also walk our dogs 6-7 times a week for an average of probably 45 minutes.

I might drink a beer or two during the week and I probably average about 4-6 beers on the weekends.

I think the only correlation between exercise and beer drinking for me is the empty calories are easier to justify if I've put full effort in at the gym so far that week. If I throw in some additional cardio I'm probably more likely to up my consumption by a beer or two.

I think I'm with the group here and basically workout so I can drink. I'm not a big lifter, but try to do enough cardio to eliminate a couple beers a night.

I have a negative correlation to beer and exercise. I seem to always be fighting weight problems even though I do exercise pretty regularly. Unfortunately when my eating habits (good food but too much of them) make it so that to pedal my bike I need to lose my exercise goes way up and my beer consumption plummets. The only exception to this is vacations where we mountain bike and then I have a few after.

You may want to add another dimension to your thesis, that is, since beer has many nutrients it supplements exercise. So one may drink beer as part of an exercise regimen. I suspect not too many folks will buy off on this. My wife doesn't.

Actually, I drink beer because I like beer. I exercise mostly because I like it but being a desk jockey I think exercise is important. Having said that, I have gone extended periods of times without drinking (although not lately since I have come to my senses) and have gone an extended period of time without exercising.

So I guess I have "proved that in my case there is no correlation between my beer consumption and exercise.

It also replaces all the carbs used up. That is my theory and I am sticking with it!

I have increased my beer consumption in the last 4 months. I have also been setting new PRs in the gym for Bench Press and Squats. Coincidence? I think NOT, sir. Correlation = causation; drink beer make Grognak stronk!
