Chris, is there a specific reason(s) that you don't like Enjoy By?

    Cheers!

Or IP, when you tell him how much you enjoy his beer and try to thank him for his work in the industry.

Yup, it's one of those beers I taste onions, weeds, and salt in. Not as strong as some others, but enough where I don't typically order it. RuinTen is more my thing.

Despite the statements that Stone Enjoy By is brewed using the same recipe I personally have noted that the varying batches have varying flavor profiles; sometimes I enjoy drinking this beer and sometimes I don't. I don't know if this variability is due to the variability of ingredients (e.g., differing sources or age of hops), variability in the brewing process or something else.

    Cheers!

I am not really sure what you mean. Are you saying we should only say nice things about Stone? If so last time I checked this is an open forum to express our own opinions good or bad.

is there any reason this beer will taste different than the regular enjoy by?
i feel like the difference will only be cosmetic.

From the link in the original post:

“In most cases, skipping a step is a bad thing. Not this time. This version of Stone Enjoy By IPA omits the part where we filter out the extra yeast, hop sediment and proteins that build up in beer as a natural result of the brewing process. Though it may sound like it, this missed step was no misstep. By letting this IPA go unfiltered, its peach and tropical fruit hop flavors are amplified while its golden-hued color takes on a hazy appearance. Like its filtered counterpart, this IPA is brewed specifically NOT to last, and is shipped immediately to ensure hopheads get their hands on it as soon as possible.”

    Cheers!

So does that mean the filtered beer sacrificed flavor for clarity?

Yes, filtering strips aroma/flavor from beer.

    This was discussed by @Peter_Wolfe:

“They have a DE filter, but do they use it on every brand? I agree that that Union Jack is a fantastic IPA - I stand by the fact that DE strips out some aroma though. If you start from a place where taking out 30% of the aroma leaves you with the aroma you want you can certainly make a wonderful beer. You're still throwing hops away.

I'm not critiquing anyone's process or beers, simply saying aroma loss due to filtration isn't apocryphal, it's empirical. There's lots of excellent filtered beers out there, nevertheless.”

Why business owners would go on-line and post unpleasant remarks to their customers (beer consumers in the case of BA) is truly dumbfounding to me. Tony Magee (owner of Lagunitas and his BA name is DogTown) used to do this when he was actively posting on BA in the past.

All that I can guess is that Greg Koch was having an unpleasant time while waiting in the airport and decided to vent?

    Cheers!

It's a hobby. Do you put a dollar amount on the time you spend making your nutbutter? I'm sure you keep some nutbutter
around for comparison and when they quit making that crunchy style nutbutter you make your own damn crunchy nutbutter. I didn't claim and can't claim that my "homemade stuff" is better than Stones because I have not had one of their beers in over a year. I choose not to get caught up in the commercial hype of spending my money on the latest and greatest gimmick beer and rather spend it towards making beer I enjoy drinking and sharing with family and friends.

If you are willing to give me un-biased feedback I will gladly send you some beers I have on tap. PM your address.

I try to buy most of what Stone puts out, and enjoy the majority of it to be honest. Some don't quite deliver like I've expected, but I don't expect perfection out of any brewery.

I realize that as a business owner, getting a little shitty with BA's may not be the wisest thing in the world. That being said, @StoneGreg did the same thing most would do if being criticized. @Kaingers essentially dogged the beers Stone brews, and then said he could brew 5 gallons of beer for the same price...even though stating s/he hasn't had a Stone beer in over a year.

@tylerstubs That sucks that you didn't have a very good in person encounter with Greg for sure; not cool to get shit on by somebody you have that kind of respect for.

I'd like to try these beers because, like mentioned above, I enjoy what Stone puts out. I'm not saying it's right/wrong to act this way (admittedly, if I owned one of the larger craft breweries, I'd probably say/do whatever I felt like within reason lol). But before you guys go boycotting Stone, just remember that MANY a wealthy successful man has this 'fuck off' attitude as well (see: Steve Jobs when he was still alive and running Apple...). It's also THAT attitude that leads to innovation, in my opinion (risk takers, who believe in their vision, and protect it with their lives).

Can't say I've really had many unfiltered beers, so this should be quite enjoyable.

Edit: @Kaingers I really hope you are able to get some beer to @StoneGreg. I'm interested to hear his review on the beer.

I am not being a troll here but: Did Steve Jobs go on public forums and speak unkindly to customers?

    Cheers!

Those haven't come my way yet, but I have had many a cloudy beer before. I believe I've even had one inspired by those brewers made by Rushing Duck- intense hoppiness up front, low malt character but smooth protein-rich mouthfeel, moderate bitterness, powdery dry finish.

In order to do a real comparison, though, you'd have to let it settle and see if there is anything in there that made an impact beforehand. I've mentioned this before, but when I did just that with some Heady Topper, I found it to be a much better beer with a cleaner taste after a decanted pour.

That seems to be beside the point, though, because the Stone copy didn't say that they were reformulating the beer to be 'turbid'; they are just changing their process to remove the filtration.

Honestly don't know if he did or not. What I do know, however, based on the volumes produced about Steve Jobs that he was much more disrespectful than coming on a forum and giving a guy a reality check (who again, in my mind had at least SOMETHING coming back his way - if not from @StoneGreg than by at least a few of his fellow BA's lol). Steve Jobs was pretty much a ruthless asshole, whereas @StoneGreg responded to criticism personally (whether you like / hate the response, there WAS a response - I don't see Steve Jobs giving some non-Apple consumer the time of day - positive OR negative).

Edit: Back to the actual beer now...Isn't that what we're actually here for?
