So maybe I'm just showing my ignorance when it comes to this beer. Maybe not. But I do not understand how a beer that is brewed more than once per year is in any way "whale bait". I have seen so many traders asking for Black Note, King Henry, BCBVS, CBS, BA DL's and whatever the hell else exists in extremely limited quantities. Now, I'm sure Citra is a pretty amazing beer, don't get me wrong. I hope some day to be able to try one without having to trade half my cellar, but how does Citra become this black hole of a whale catcher? I just don't get it. Please explain.

I'm basically curious about why this beer has such an astonishing trade value. To me, bigger beers (stouts & barleywines) that are cellar material are usually on par in a trade for like styles. It just seems Citra is one of those exceptions.

I was also thinking this. I figured one reason is it doesn't stick around for people to cellar. People want it right away when its fresh. Not sure if you have been to Kern but it is hard to get to and really small. They aren't able to make a ton of beer. Another reason is its an awesome beer.

It looks like you've done enough trades to know that just because people are asking the world doesn't mean they are getting it. People always try to shoot high at first with every release then when it doesn't happen things come down to what the market really is.

    try this:

    ISO: citra
FT: what you're willing to give up for it

I was just wondering the same thing when i looked at the most recent ISO/FT ....ISO:ddg, cc, rare, diamonds, unwanted children... This stuff must be super!....

Edit: Just realized they are probably asking for the empty bottles for their collection...

OMG...the beer trading line has been crossed. How dare anyone try to land a KH with another good beer. I don't understand how a beer like CBS demands so much. I guess because people want it and others are willing to give up a lot to get it. Same goes for Citra. Simple as that.

Telling myself to shut up now

Trading a beer of style A for a beer of style B is not like crossing the streams in ghostbusters.

The small sampling I've had of citra would put it in the top 5 beers I've ever tasted. I think its more of a dipa/cellaring question. You have to drink this beer quickly, which could might make people balk at giving cellarable whalish beers for it. Its limited quantities ,and great rep, certainly make it highly desireable. I'd probably trade Loons + some harder to get beers to get 2-3 bottles

Just scanning the ISO, it looks like one guy listed all of the semi-whales that get talked up on this board. He's new to this and doesn't have any idea how people value things. If you could still respond to those postings, he would have had 3 pages of threadshitting on that one.

It looks like most people are offering or looking for more valued shelf beers like HT, BBPT5, and BCBS. That seems like a pretty good comparison for a highly rated DIPA with limited availability.

Citra is THAT good... Some people just don't want to dip way into the cellar for something that they are going to drink right way, why, I have no clue. Because Citra is THAT good.

Did I mention that Citra is good?

it's my highest rated beer. I traded a fou foune straight up for a growler and boy oh boy was that a good trade.

I rated Citra as my 2nd highest beer overall. 2nd only to double sunshine, and ahead of Pliny, Heady, and every other highly sought after beer.
It is worth the hype, and it is hard to get.

Citra as a hop is damn good and rather limited. Also, if you look at a map, Kern River is in the middle of damn nowhere.

Isn't citra another middle-of-nowhere/out-of-the-way scenario too? People's time on here is very valuable.

It's good and hard to get. You just have to find someone generous (which I did for the last release) that wont hold it for ransom.

It's just like anything else. A very highly rated beer in a very popular style that is very limited and people ask for the moon and the stars. It happens regularly on BA. If they can get it, good for them.

It's a good beer. Nothing special IMO if it were an off-the-shelf beer, I'd probably pick it up from time to time but I certainly wouldn't trade for it again.

Supply and Demand. That's how the vast majority of these beer trade values work. Citra is made in small numbers and isn't exactly easy to get, plus its demand is through the roof. Look at that 1400/30 wants/gots ratio. CBS and KH aren't even in the same ballpark as Citra on the supply/demand equation.

And let's be honest here - if you're putting the likes of King Henry, BCBVS, CBS on a pedestal above Citra, you're not helping solve any problems. Absolutely no reason why those beers going for Citra should be considered crazy.

Beyond that, as noted, people will ask for ridiculous things, but it's probably not getting done.

Very limited release, small brewery, features a hop that is tough to find... Sort of a perfect storm.

That being said, I have had Citra and I enjoyed it, but it's nowhere near my favorite IPA. It's a solid beer, but not great IMO.
