Thanks bud ... Didn't you just emerge from Miller Lite like 6 months ago? I've followed your posts ... Just offering a different perspective. Take a few seasoned craft guys - open a Funkwerks Saison and a Low End blind and see how it goes. Report back.

I've been told the Saison holds its own against Hill from a regular trader of mine from VT, but they fall into the same James Joyce world of beer

I love Funkwerks Saison and have been drinking it since they opened, but it has no brett/lacto/barrel aging so it's kind if hard to compare it to Casey...apples to oranges

I love everything you post and your perspectives on these things! This made me laugh because so true! I had a very regular HF trade partner and so regularly got most of their stuff (and hit up Armsby Abbey whenever I'm in town - once a month) and couldn't agree more -- the journey for HF is definitely part of the hype. I've peed my pants from excessive Abner / Ephraim / etc consumption and think the same thing about them as I do Casey. This is good, but I'll take a Lawson's or Trillium please ... Just prefer to taste the beer for what it is. And with close to 3,000 ratings that's served me pretty well :-)

+1 for use of James Joycean....

I agree that the hype can tire, but many of Casey's beers live up to the hype, atmo, and the brewery is really pretty.

Your post scares me, however, because it makes me think that us Colorado folk -- who typically under-hype our beers -- are devolving into the over-hyping, trade bating monsters for which other regions in the country are somewhat infamous.

    Thanks

I'm far from an expert and even less on Casey, but I see hype do crazy things. It's made me preach a beer as incredible if the hype is too low or bash on a beer if the hype is too high. Hell, sometimes it even makes me agree and push the hype ever further.

My guess, only a guess, is that if Casey were rated and hyped as little as Funkwerks you'd be blowing people up with it. I did it with that same trader and FW... I tossed in a Casey Saison like it was just something he had to try

Yup, you're absolutely right. I probably would! I'm guilty of it re: Odd13. Go read my old posts and ratings ... Love those guys, do I overlook a stumble or two sometimes because I love what they're doing ... Absolutely.

But if people start driving 5 hours to wait in line and there's a ticketing system and there are threads bowing to the altar of Ryan (head brewer at Odd13) - I may pull up a bit and say hold the goddamn phone - let's have some unemotional perspective here ... :-) balance is my only point

Note to self, heavily discount eawolff99's opinion on all matters moving forward.

Smart move. Welcome to Beer Advocate, son. :-) You should definitely leverage your own opinions on things such as, oh I don't know - taste and flavors - versus relying on others. But on a website that rates beers and has forums dedicated to discussing such things -- I'm not sure that public notes to oneself attempting to admonish someone providing some constructive counter-balance to a wildly hyped brewery is particularly helpful ... Thanks though.

Thank you to @eawolff99 for some entertainment tonight!

I agree with you on some of what you said and disagree on others. But damn, this has been a fun read tonight!

Bold move, eawolff99. Let's see if it pays off.

I'm just wondering what Casey is overhyped against? You mentioned comparing Funkwerks and I enjoy Funkwerks but they don't make the same type of beers and aren't even in the same ballpark. Apt comparisons would be with Rare Barrel, Side Project, Jester King SARA, and the like. And as far as fruited saisons and sours go Casey is just as good if not better than most other breweries doing that style. Maybe you just don't like those type of beer and that's fine but drainpouring Brett Loves Citra is just insane. My 2 non beer nerd friends tried it and declared it the best beer they've ever tried. It's also my gf's favorite beer so to each his own I guess.

My note TOTALLY agrees with that - despite his a$$hole posts to a reasonable counter-perspective to a heavily hyped brewery. I said he was IT and that he was comedy gold! That was pretty nice of me given how someone could read his posts as being a complete tool ... Not to mention his "head of janitation" pic ...

Agreed! I was a member of Rare Barrel and have everything they put out their first year and have had tons from the other referenced breweries .... I set the bar lower using FW as an example, but those other guys are in an entirely different tier than Casey IMO ... So happy to host a blind tasting of all these guys at my place if anyone wants to join. 500 BA points or higher to attend ... No rookies (sorry: Mike1512, ssteigerwald, and omgeezo). Let me know if interested ...
