I can't stop filling up growlers at this place. Anybody else blown away by their beer?

I just had a bomber of Lizard Mountain and it was really, really good. Actually, I was working near their brewery a couple years back and all their brews were solid...I remember the nut brown ale tasting fantastic.

I've found Fig Mountain to be hit or miss. Lizard's Mouth is very good with a ton of tropical fruit flavor when fresh and the four packs are great. I tried a flight of their special beers including a BA stout in Buellton a few months back and none of them were good.

The one I'm into right now is their hopped Weiss Weiss Baby but I like it way better out of a can than on tap for some reason. Also I tried their 12% seasonal doppelbock the other day and I thought it was amazing.

Better than Manrock I guess, LOL ... for now, only two Central Coast CA breweries that totally excite me = Firestone & Libertine

I'll have to check out Libertine. I was at Firestone Barrelworks recently and couldn't find anything I liked.

I was at a party with the owner, and he was very excited to bust out a bottle of the Liquamentum or whatever it's called. It was terrible...like, I wanted to spit it out. I had a Tovarish already out, and, well, let's just say that after tasting his beer, I felt bad about giving him a taste of the Beachwood, because he seemed like a nice guy.

I mean, if I'm not already a few sheets to the wind from Barrelworks, I'll stop in for a pint. But can't say they make anything that is spectacular.

Barrelworks all around? It doesn't even taste like beer.

Someone doesn't like Barrelworks? Now that's a first.

After seeing these reactions, I wouldn't blame you for thinking so.

I get the impression that you're just not down for barrel aged beers. No harm in that, it just kind of goes against the grain of most palates here. Barrelworks is widely considered to have some of the highest quality, innovative and just generally fantastic brews in the area and no one has really disputed that. That being said, different strokes for different folks.

As for it not tasting like beer, well, I think you might get some pushback on that one. Craft beer has been pushing boundaries for quite some time now and barrel ages beers are pretty universally accepted as being deserving of the "beer" label. Sure it doesn't taste like an IPA or a hef, but how do you propose to qualify what beer tastes like. There's just too much variation in style these days. Dogfish head makes some crazy wild stuff that I doubt most would consider beer if they weren't told what it was first, but it still falls under the heading.

Getting back on topic, I think Figueroa Mountain makes some solid stuff. Nothing crazy, but they certainly make some good beer that is true to traditional style which is refreshing sometimes. Like Squid said above, I usually make a trip there after BW if I'm in any state to.

In the end, drink what you enjoy and don't be pressured to drink what you don't like. Your wallet will thank you when it comes to these styles, for sure. Your fellow BA's will thank you too for leaving more for them.

Nice, OK so maybe barrel-aged is what I don't like.

Central Coast Brewing is making some great hoppy stuff. Lucky Day and Monterey are fantastic.
