Been drinking a few double IPA's since the year began, with varied results. My favorites have been Dogfish Head 90 minute and Great Lakes Erie Monster, both were nice and hoppy but with some malt and very little (to me) pine. I also liked Mojo Risin from Boulder. Hopslam and Surly Abrasive were really piney (cedar-y, etc.) to me, and Hop Wallop was similar but not as strong. Any recomendations on really good IIPA's that are lighter on the pine and have nice malt and more citrus/floral hop profiles?

    Thanks alot.

If you can find some Sierra Nevada Hoptimum I would highly recommend it.

I would say Uinta Hop Notch, Brooklyn Blast, FFF Dreadnaught, Bell's The Oracle (maybe not, has a good bit of malt), DC Brau On The Wings of Armageddon.

Lagunitas Hop Stoopid is my go-to for well-balanced inexpensive readily available double IPA. Founders Double Trouble comes to mind too.

First of all if you can get Pliny...yeah it's amazing.
What I can get much more easily that I really enjoy from best to worst (worst still being damn good):
    Avery Maharaja
    Great Divide Hercules
    Victory Hop Wallop
    Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA
    Stoudts Double IPA
    Smuttynose Big A

I think all of these blow away hoptimum (isn't nearly as balanced)

If you can get Maharaja go get it right now.

NOt that I cna get it, but isn't Pliny realy "piney"?

Founders Double Trouble and Hoptimum and pretty readily available, might give those a try tonight.

Pliny is very piney indeed, here's an excerpt from my review:

I always find that the higher ABV (9+) DIPAs have lots of malt and therefore are sweeter and less piney. I love the piney IPAs so I stick to thoses. I generally don't like high ABV DIPAs.

I'm looking for IIPA's light on the pine, so that one is definitely out.

I think the Double Simcoe is also very piney? Which from your list is least piney?

O'so Humulus Lupulus is awesome and very malty sweet with nice citrus hop bitterness. Almost has a BA taste to it.
Avery maharaja has a nice malt backbone also.

Stoudts is what you want, it's closer to a 90 minute rather than piney.
And possibly Big A, but I don't remember exactly if it was really piney or not.

All the rest I listed are pretty piney.

In general, choose DIPA's over 9.0% abv, if you don't like pine.

First ones that came to mind, along with Southern Tier's 2XIPA (insert usual caveats about freshness). All very nice beers.

Devil Dancer is 12% and like pure freaking pine with a hint of grapefruit floating around in the background.

I liked it on the day it hit shelves more. More pronounced hops and less powdery malt, but its still a great beer
